This is a must see, I’m sure once people start learning how to use the new Unwrap UVW features characters are going to look so much more real, along with UT2007 if we ever see it.

Check out the Pelt mapping video: I am blown away!

Holy crap.

The arm had a strange split at the end, and you'd obviously want to tweak it some more after laying them out, but for the most part... ...holy crap.

(at least for the pelt mapping pull out thing, everything else has been available before, at least in body paint)

It is as sweet as it looks! I unwrapped my character (5000 polys) in under an hour and a half using pelt. Keep in mind that it was my first time using the new system, as well as the first time I've used max in about two years (took awhile just to remember how to navigate the damn interface.)

Pelt mapping certainly is badass, I had to do very little cleanup while laying out the uvs thanks to the other tools they tweaked to compliment pelt.

I never came to make 3d caracters yet, either i don't mapped a caracter texture on it, but when i looked at this pelt mapping technique i was pretty impressed by it. Sounds very good.

And guess what:
It looks like Autodesk, (aka/3dsMax) has bought Alias/ known as Maya. for 182 million in cash.

So I’m sure we will see even more great stuff in Max9 when that’s out!

Off topic but, I heard Adobe was buying Macromedia for 3.4 billion. I got that kind of cash in my back pocket. :D

The only downside to this Pelt thing from what I read at that article above is:

Due to the spring like nature of it, it’s said work better on things like rounded body parts. On the down side it doesn’t do very well with square things like mail boxes, houses and cars unless it was something like a Volkswagen bug which is kind of rounded to begin with.

I don’t know, but either way it’s a huge improvement that’s for sure.

Man that is the one thing I hate most about Making 3d stuff, UVW-mapping.

Its not really meant for boxy stuff, more organic shapes really. I suspect the plelt mapping came about primarily as an aid to character modelers. Boxy stuff can easily be done with a UVW Map modifier.

Alas that they make you essentially buy the program at full price every time with each new release - their 'upgrade for a lower price' thing is only honored once or twice. Then you have to buy the whole program all over again..... I bought 3Dmax when it was Max2 - you do the math :(
