Who wants 50 US Dollers?

Ive been talking about funding a little competition for coders. Winner selected by me, gets 50 dollers. Send you a money order, or gift card or something. Now I wont do this unless theres several people interested. I wont partipicate of course. Anyone got any good ideas for a competition either?

Now there would be some rules of course, all enties would be open sourced, and would become part of a WMP pack. The competition would probable last a month or 2, and would either be a weapon or a mutator. I got a couple of ideas, but I wanna see what you people think.

a WMP weapons pack seems like a great idea! I especially like the idea that all entrants get put into the download. Gives everyone a chance to say "hey, someone downloaded something i made!"
IMO the playing field should be as level as possible, so my twitch reaction is to say only stock assets... but that might be a bit hasty... either way, custom models and skins shouldnt affect a weapons 'review.'

Since im such a great and awesome guy (modest too) i can more than likely scrape up another $25 to throw into the pot

How about this, a 2 seperate competitions. A weapons competition with a 25 doller grand prize, and a 10 doller runner up, and a mutator competition with a 25 doller grand prize, and a 10 doller runner up. All working entries go into a WMP Pack.

Voting would be on the WMP main page, and nothing would be released untill the final date, then the whole pack gets released, and the people vote, then we make the final decision.

How this for rules:

1. The submited entry must be previously unreleased, and can not be a remake of a previous Unreal mod or mute. You can only send in 1 entry for Mutator, and 1 weapon, and you can only submit 1 verson of said weapon and/or mute.
2. Entry will be open sourced, and may be put in a WMP pack.
3. Entry must be under a meg in size.

Grading will consist of 2 parts.

By 'previously unreleased' do you mean that for example, Sammaster's pack cant be entered... Or that the only time it should be let out for public use is when judging is announced? If its the first, i completely agree. The weapon should be made specifically for the contest (or at least, it needs to be new work)
Though, i think that a remake of a mute NOT already in UT2003 should be fine (hell, theres not really much you can do without inadvertantly remaking an old mute )
Under a meg in size... Would that mean that custom art assets will be acceptable as long as it comes in under the size restriction?

I think it does mean that. All my weapons are over 5 megs because of the art.

I would perfer each thing to be a new creation, not to be announced untill the pack is released. I thought about allowing previously released items, but if Sam or Smoke could take something they allready made and tweek it, whats to stop a major mod taking one of their weapons, and sending it in.

I dont mean to be choking strick with the remake thing. I mean what limits are there, if you think you can make a better MP5, I wont count that against all the other MP5's. But if you make an almost perfect copy of the U4e bubblegun? Work for Word, the MP5 would be more of a copy. Heh, how many railguns are almost exactly the same. You can make an allready tried and true idea, but expect to get counted off in the Origionalty idea.


Im still flexable, make youre argument now. I will try and up the ante.

My main concern is that we will only have a few contestents

someone working on MSUC could easly take a week and throw together a simple weapon or mute. Complex need not mean good.

The actuall contest timeline would probable only be a month(so if/when we do this, You dont have the time to make a whole new game in 1 package.

Im starting to dislike the idea of making 2 seperate parts of a competition.

Perhaps just Best Mute, winner gets 50, runner up, 25?

A weapon competition IMO, is a better way go to. MSUC is already covering the Mutator base, but they dont have a category for weapons Granted, the 50 dollar prize for a good weapon in our contest comes nowhere near the 5k and a free computer prize from the MSUC... But the idea here is more of a friendly competition. None of this 'U STOEL MY SMESHES UR MOD SUX' type of cut throat competition involved with MSUC. In the end, everyones a winner, all the <weapons/mutators> are put into a single pack, so its not like one person is going to get more 'coverage' than anyone else

granted. I like the idea of a weapon competition. I'd even limit the entrants to a SINGLE weapon, which should simplify the judging process a lot. What about making it a themed competition, to make sure people have to create a completely new thing, and also to have a more consistent weapon pack in the end? like all energy or all fire based guns, surreal weapons, close combat, bullet using weapons, devices that make use of explosives somehow, for example...

Yes, its only a single weapon per person.

surreal weapons would require models, and close combat would proable result in a ton of light sabers/ swords. The user should be able to make what ever he wants. A grappeling hook that can skewer, or a full auto grenade launcher.

Allright, if 13 people tell me they will enter this, and actually make something. I will release the revised guidelines, and starting pimping it, and set a finish date.

I ment all along for the competition to be for a SINGLE weapon. That way, with 10 or more entries, we get a whole weapons pack. Make sence? I never wanted a whole mod, I wanted something that someone should be able to reasonable make in a week, and get as good as possible. An ending date would probable be around the end of Febuary.
