Actually, when mIRC pings the IRC server it connects to, it says 'PING? PONG!'. So... (Loibisch-style waffle follows)
When the ping comes back as pong, the ping is in the past and the pong is now the present form of the ping. This means that pong is actually the present tense, and ping is the past tense. This only applies if something has been ping. So if nothing has been ping, it can be called ping in the present conditional non-eventual, and the past is pinged in the past conditional non-eventual. If something has been ping, the present is pong in the present positive conditional existence, and the past is ping in the past positive conditional existence.
Got that? Anyone want to dispute this?
