We don't know yet.

In all likelihood if and when Half-Life 2 comes out, it will use the engine developed by Valve for Team Fortress II.

Seeing as how we haven't seen anything of TF2's latest developments, it would be speculation at best. I'm willing to bet tho that the Unreal 2 engine will be better.

Unreal 2 will come out before Half-Life 2, so HL2 will probably look better.

Unreal 2 is also using the Unreal engine which is being heavily modified, but is still not a totally new engine. The TF2 engine is completely new. If HL2 doesn't use the TF2 engine, you can bet it'll look even better than that!

HL came out later than Unreal and looked worse by far... which the developers of the original game hid very well. Of course, that was because it used the old Quake 2 engine. And since there's nothing out about the engine HL 2 will use yet, no one can really do more than guess.

Just because Half-Life looked worse than Unreal does not mean the slightest bit that Unreal 2 will look better than Half-Life 2. Sure, we can only guess, but Half-Life 2 will use a much newer engine, so it's only logical that the new technology will make HL2 prettier than U2.

Essentially, this question can't be answered, as the HL2 engine has no history.

That aside, my bet is on Epic, as they already have a proven track record of engine creation. Valve has terrific content, but nothing to show in the (new - not modified) engine field.

I didn't mean that. What I meant was that just because a game comes out later than another doesn't mean it looks better. And the HL vs. Unreal example was simply the most obvious.

Its all relative...

No doubt some features will be better in one game, other features better in the other. Kind of like Unreal and Quake 3. And artistic design matters as much as the engine.

Back after a long absence

I'll go out on a limb and say the Unreal 2 engine will be better.

Funnily enough, I've just started playing both Unreal and Half-Life again. I've had some problems with both on my Athlon/Nvidia PC, but I won't go into that.

Unreal and any game based on that engine has always seemed more graphically pleasing to me. Comparing the two original games, I'd have to say Unreal looks a lot better, but Half-Life plays a lot better.

I don't actually mind if this trend continues. If Unreal 2 looks fantastic and plays well, and Half-Life looks good and plays brilliantly, then I'll be a happy man.

However, it would be excellent if the Half-Life 2 engine could follow the current trend, and implement some kicka$$ features. I'm not saying it has to have rolling terrain and vast outdoor levels (like some upcoming games will have), but it should concentrate a lot on the lighting, realtime deformations, realistic textures, high poly-counts and advanced skeletal animation, including better facial animation.

In terms of how Half-Life 2 plays, I don't want to see it detract too much from how the first game played. They pretty much captured the essence of a perfect gaming experience, and they need to be careful about what features they implement in the sequel. The same really goes for Unreal 2, about which we at least have some advance information.

In summary, both engines will have their strengths and weaknesses, and it's up to the developers to get the best gaming experience possible out of their own technology. But then, they don't need me to tell them that... ;)

Very good point. There is no evidence that the HL2 engine will be better. But it's the same way the other way. There's no evidence that it won't be better. Just cause the Unreal 2 engine looks good, and Epic has a proven record, doesn't mean an updated engine is going to look better than a totally new one that comes out later. :)

Probably, the unreal2 engine will look better, and have a lot of new features, especially if it supports geforce3, BUT my problem with the unreal1 engine is that there always is some problem with it. with my rivatnt I had a problem in the menu with 32 bit, now with my geforce2gts I have mouse lag even with texture detail to low. I don't play it a lot anymore because of that, I just write tutorials

Other games never have so much problems

That made my choice difficult, but I chose unreal2 anyway because I hope to have a new computer by then that does not give probs :)
