UT players might enjoy Nexuiz -- UT99/Quake3 type free GPU game

Moderators--if this is the wrong forum, please move the thread. It seems like a good place since this is relevant to people who are interested in or at least like discussing UT3.

Nexuiz

Those of you who feel that UT3 just isn't a good successor to UT99 and who are interested in what might be a worthy successor might find this post interesting.

I've never heard of this before, but just now learned about the existence of a free GPU-type game built on a modified Quake 3 engine called Nexuiz. I watched the video at their website and it doesn't look bad. It strikes me as a game that's (1) designed for the PC, (2) focused on the quality of the game play and the fragging, and (3) amenable to modding and custom content.

Could this be what we've all been waiting for? I have no idea; I just watched the video, but I'm intrigued. Apparently it's been around since mid-2005 but it's still receiving updates (most recent one was in May 2009). I think that an open-source type of project is really people's best bet for a UT99/Quake 3 successor (as opposed to a new release from a gaming company infected with Consolitus), which is why I find this so interesting.

Wow that has really changed since last time I checked it out.
What ticked me off was that I needed to redownload the whole game each time for updates, but it's a very good game. I'm downloading again since I don't have it installed anymore (reformat)

For a free game it's decent FPS. I've played it about year ago and I somewhat enjoyed it, it has fast action, familiar gametypes, some good enough maps and music, even Facing Worlds map was ported from UT. It's definitely worth a try.

Got a feeling of deja vu here. Oh, I replied to this on another forum.

I love Quake Live, it's free too.

Nothing is like the original UT experience. I am returning there any day now.

I like fast paced games, but a game having so lame characters and weapons, I rather stay away from it, I don't care if it is free, it just smells of n00bishness and any UT is better than that.

Well that is, there are even some retail and popular games which smell of n00bishness as well, such as Halo series.

Yeah, you are right... ...I hate those kind of games with limited movement, n00bstuff like slomo-volumes, gamespy-requirement and gimmicks, gimmicks, gimmicks....

Basically all those games are just rips of Quake III's movement system. Why does no one ever make a UT3-esque movement system? It's always Quake and the stupid jump momentum thing + floaty weightless character movement.

I agree with how you guys feel. What I find interesting about it is that it's open source--it can be improved and modified to a point where it eventually feels more like UT (as long as it doesn't violate the copyright). Anyway, my point is that I think we have a much better chance of getting a good arena style FPS from an open source community than we will from a consolized gaming company. That's what I find intriguing about this--it's not consolized and doesn't have a compromised corporate influence.

Tried it out, kind of fun although I really miss dodging and wall jumping, and dislike the silly "accelerate by jumping" aspect.

Overall I thought it was pretty impressive for being free. Not sure how this compares to Quake Live though as I haven't tried that out.
