I see we have numerous mappers around so I express my idea to you. I see U2 and UT both lack city maps. Now almost every map is mainly open outdoor which isn´t especially beneficial to game balance. City atmosphere would nice for this game for it makes turrets and mines lightyears more useful when they aren´t always so clearly visible. This doesn´t mean that snipers are gonna get raped: opposite coz they actually have huge advantage with loads of camping spots. And this encourages people to moving in groups for fighting enemy snipers.

The problems with city environment is mainly with arti running. In open maps it´s almost hopeless to try catch fleeing ranger let alone in closed space. Still this is a minor problem when compared with the new possibilities. So if somebody has spare time and leet mapping skills I´d really like to see city maps in future. Thanks in advance. Sort of heading in the right direction.

A thing to keep in mind for mapping this kind of environment is to make sure it works well with the movement. It's been a long time since I saw a map that has something special that you can only get to by moving properly (Quake 3 had a few that required a rocket jump, for example). Buildings give a great chance for wall jumping (another plus for the rangers) and its best to make use of this.

That map got shelved after the first private beta build unfortunately. It had some significant problems...

I wonder if I still have a copy of it...

There are abunch of decent vCTF maps out there that would make good urban maps for XMP. ACTIONCITY and Aggresive Alleys come to mind. BBF has been playing alot of vCTF while waiting for the next patch of UT:XMP. If you havn't yet, give it a try, its pretty fun.

I want a Walmart map, damn it.

I was actually working on an urban map; unfortunately I reformatted and whatnot after tons of upgrades; if you want, you can check out what I managed to complete below.

Using textures outside of XMP was a cinch, I have tons that came with my 3D illustrating programs, and I also have Photoshop to get the images just right, as far as dimensions, format, etc. goes; I even started creating my own .tga textures with alpha channels and had it nailed down pat, too.

I might try my hand at it again sometime; high school graduation coming up, so I have to get my head out of my ass and actually start worrying about school again. :(

nice screens! those must be massive textures, but they look great.
i rather like the urban idea, but think we should try to keep the sci-fi genre of xmp going. can't hink of a good reason why, just that that's the background to the game. that xmp-aftermath is beaut.

btw, don't forget to put a dungeon in the castle-with-the-lava-filled-moat. i don't think dungeons have been done before in fps games.... ;)

I like the look of the Urban map, but you'll need more than one energy source ;)

True; the map was drafty and far from complete; those images were only of red base. :p I intended it to be much bigger with vehicle use and everything too. Kamakazi loaded it into our U2XMP server for people to test out for a little while; very small, and spam prone for gas. o.o I might try doing a remake during the summer; probably more open instead of claustrophobic.

I tried making an urban map. Made like....2 buildings. It turned out looking exactly like XMP-Urban o_O so I scrapped it. I rather do like my road system though, since it had sidewalk and all the proper lines on the concrete and storm drains and whatnot.

I do have some plan for huge skyscrapers since Im good with stuff like that, but not inspired enough right now.
