Leo, can I get your version of the chameleon?
I have the one from 227f, but since I found out that you made your version i would like to take a look at it.

Look for the aztec release thread, that chameleon is included in it.
I originally released it at 2006 though.

I am a noob about all this fancy beta and alpha stuff. Am I to understand that U2XMP is open source, or just the betas/alphas? If U2XMP was free, it would be cool to try to get it on Steam as a free game to try to increase the communuty again.

Unfortunately, no. I am following this whole beta situation as closely as I possibly can and I can't honestly see any release of any of the other Unreal betas for at least a year. :(

Why is that? If you don't mind sending me PM actually...nobody talks to me about it recently and I am tired of some people not answering my request with recovery of some old stuff too (not the betas).

hmmm, first if you read the story of Unreal, James Schmalz pretty much created it and the excitement about it grew and mushroomed.
For the main player character I always knew it was female and the default character is female. I thought the name was Sonya but its Gina in the game.
Her birthplace is Earth but a Skaarj hybrid, you wonder. I found a storyline online about her back story and capture (this gets hinted on in my Search series)
As far as the first RTNP, and note your talking about legalities and if the beta or whatever version might be openly released, I would say, I don't care either way, but think about if an Unreal 3 is made would any storyline of that use that RTNP material (storyline). My feeling about a true Unreal sequal should follow 849 somehow and her backstory and events after Na Pali.
But it should be EPIC to do that on NextGen.
So, I don't care if this old material is "officially" released or not.
If it is the community will probably give it the workover and fix it. For my projects, its different, I don't think I need it.

Not really, not the betas....how can I? There's no possibility unless someone really responds. And if it would be released it would have checks, so ppl who don't have Unreal simply won't play it.

Anyway...I want the cancelled expansion also to be recovered.

Have there been any updates?

Sorry, no.

Since the copies that the original announcement referred to unfortunately perished in a flood and Epic (Read: Tight-Fisted Legal department) being reluctant to share, it seems the only hope now is if someone else out there has them, and happened to stumble upon this thread. Chances of this happening are slim to none IMO.

I do know of one person who may have at least one beta (One with the dragon IIRC), but they told me that the computer it is stored on is stored away and possibly broken.

It was not definitive and it is more likely they won't do anything about it. However on my end I can't do anything with it.

The original owner should be able to get the copies back from the source he had it or trace it down. It is up to him to do it. I can't do anything, I don't even know where to look.
Listen, sitting here won't help it. The original source should be contacted, whether he had it from someone from DE. K?

Some people just don't share the same interest for the game as we do. I know that myself, you and many other people are dying for these betas, but some others just aren't and can't justify looking through old computer files for the betas and then gain nothing from it.

The person who possessed these betas (Who planned to release them) just wants to forget all about it and I think we should respect that. If you want to ask him to contact Epic games and attempt to reclaim these betas (Which I think would be possible) then go for it.

I want these betas as much as you do, and I am willing to go to great lengths to get them. I have contacted a few people that may be able to provide some information on the matter. I can ask the person I referred to at the beginning of my post again if they could be of assistance.

Yeap, that's all true. I can understand people who don't share the interest in betas, but why can't they understand those who do? And it shouldn't be much of digging, unless, of course, those computers are very clogged up :)

The original source has mixed feelings about this. On one hand, he would really like to see them brought into the light of day, but on the other hand, he fears that legal action may be taken against him (which TBH I don't understand - since when asking is considered against the rules?).

By the way, so was there ever a response from DE, Leo, or did your letter get thrown into the "spam"/"trash" folder by them? I still don't see any reason, except for laziness, why they couldn't release them/let us release them.

The source's copies perished in a flood while he was moving house. Some discs were badly damaged with water and his disc drive can't read them.

I know that for a long time actually. What I meant is that he would ask for replacement.
Anyway, no word from DE before, should I try my luck again? It would be better if he asked now though instead. I am trying to recover the UPSX stuff or the missionpack right now (and still some people outright ignore me). And yeah nothing can happen if he asks.

I think that is a good idea, but It's up to him if he wants to contact them. Some of his recent E-Mails have been ignored by Epic :(
If he can get a reply from them, then I see no reason why they can't allow a replacement of them.

You're right, it sucks when people just ignore your E-Mails rather than actually replying to them, even if the response is negative. I suppose DE and Epic Games have a lot going on, being game developers and all.

Quoted for truth: I meant that those were his feelings about asking DE again; and yeap, if he asks, it will have more of an impact, since he knows some people there. And yes, nothing bad can happen if he asks, since there is no rule forbidding that.

And then again, in my opinion letters to big companies have to be written in a diplomatic style, since I'm sure that they go through quite a lot of filters before they reach someone; and they create a bigger effect, since a well-reasoned writing in formal style is always more ground on facts. Even right now I can tell at least 10 independent reasons why releasing them or parts of them would be a good idea. Besides, compromises can be made, for example, getting a permission to make a BP out of betas would suffice as well.
