Well, I've been doing something useful. I've made a tool that can be used to check Your zip for missing packs. Like QUALTHWAR puts it "The map won't load, possibly a missing citytex.utx". Well, I've caught with that disease myself as well ... the AS-Rebellion is missing the SGITech.utx package (although that one is in the BP #4).

Well, here is a solution for that disease, just copy Your map into a separate directory (You would do that anyway) and in the command prompt give this command:
UnTools DM-MyMap.unr packneed
and hit enter. You will get a list of all packages that should be shipped with Your map. And If You want to check about the bonus pack needs, do it this way:
UnTools DM-MyMap.unr packneed -bp1 -bp2 -bp3 -bp4
For all Epic packages including the bonus ones just add option -epic

Get the zip (770k) from HERE

So why is this in here and not in showroom or in Advanced mapping ?

Because by using this tool You can save some effort from NC staff by eliminating unnessecary updates on zip deliveries.

The zip is about 700K of which the executable is about 80K. The executable does not need to be installed or anything, just copy it somewhere to be accessible by Your path. You can waste the rest of the stuff in the zip unless You are keen on programming (C++) and want to know something about reading Unreal packages. I would also be thanful for any help with this one.

As a bonus You get the ability to rip off textures out of Unreal packages (Only BMP export works).

The future:
I will add another neat feature to this tool; it will generate a report on the given map listing weapos, armors, player starts, health and just about everything the mapper included in the map. You can direct the tool to make this a web page with screenshot. And if it is an assault map, the briefings with all texts are also included. All this is also available in HTML so You can put the thing into Your homepage.

The HTML thing will be merely a filler; You first create a neat looking page where You reserve certain areas for different things and put a special marker in there. Then the UnTools reads this prefabricated page, inserts the map information, generates the images and there You are. Doing it this way let's You decide how it looks.

What does it cost:
I'm pretty content with the smile on Your face !

(If someone missed the meaning of that one ... it is free to use, just don't sell it to anyone).

Ok rukee, here goes (although I TRIED to explain it earlier :) )

First of all, the _WinNT and the _Linux directories (folders) contain the binaries. As You seem to have the WIN98 (or 2000) You will need to go into the _WinNT folder.
There You should locate a file carrying name UnTools.
Now just copy that thing into Your C:\WINDOWS directory.

After this You can pretty much dispose (delete) everything else You downloaded. I included all this stuff for completeness sake. The executable contains a bried inbuilt help which will print out when You use the program without any arguments.

Now, this is a silly program that has no fancy GUI and so it must be operated from the MsDos command prompt. And believe me or not, there are some good reasons for it being this way.

So You open the command prompt and type UnTools and hit enter. You should get two screenfulls of help text which should be able to guide You through the rest of the process.

The main thing is, You should go into the folder (in the MsDos prompt) that You are going to zip and give this command with proper arguments.

As I said, the program is a dumb-ass and it has no fancy GUI. It also has about zillion bugs in it but mostly it does the work. For those of You that are interested whether this program is a candidate for crashing the windows, I've pressed it through Purify and driven it with BoudsChecker..... which should pretty much ensure it will not ruin Your Windows If it crashes.

I like "UnChecker" better than all the names in the Poll.

Thanks Varpu, this is a great thing to have, and I got it working/figured it out, even though I really dislike dos. It'd also be nice to be able to use the -p switch for levels that use loads of packages - it wouldn't let me.

In the NT folder I got a "make file" and a 'unextract"
which one goes into the "C"directory??

I don't like fancy names for tools much

So I vote for "MapView(er)"

Or "UnView" for an alternative... my old problem... indecisiveness

I voted for "Other Name"

I don't think the name should have "Nali" as the prefix, since all review sites will find this tool useful.

My suggestion: VERIFY

An abbreviation for "Varpu's Easy Resource in Finding Your custom textures"

Um, unless I'm misinterpreting, it sounds like:

It will do if you just double click. Either:

Open up a proper prompt from the start menu, then get to the correct directory and run it with the right command,

or:

No. I've just found this second thing won't work with Untools. On some dos progs you can right click, and there will be a program tab, on which you can uncheck "Close on exit". (W98 Example: nbtstat.exe)

consensus huh? Doesn't look like it's going to happen.

But ppl, Naliminator really is too childish. MapView sounds like a useful tool, however.

Ha. This is what happens with amateur democracy... in a proper one, adequate consensus is assured by giving media saturation to just two or maybe three of the many alternatives, thus neatly sweeping the rest under the carpet. Nyah.

MapView is good, even MapCheck

This is my favorite "Verify". It has clash. Varpu's Easy Resource in Finding Your....

Verify sounds like it could be used anyway, and now it even stands for something that tells what it does.
