somewhere; sometime?

too bad UT III nearly ruined the series. I think TossMonkey said it best:

I no longer wonder why Unreal Tournament 3 sucks, you took it too damn serious. Bring back the stupidly large shoulder padded semi naked men thrusting in sexual victory over a dead nali cow all to the soundtrack of "oh yeah baby" and silly electronic music in a cheese-tastic purple neon 90's space setting. (and blue nali women with 4 breasts)

Here's to hoping the next installment trains its sights back on the roots of what made Unreal and Unreal Tournament such landslide classics.

Off course
OMG, is it TEN WHOLE YEARS already?

I, as just about everyone here, have very fond memories of Unreal...

-the deep atmosphere...brilliant music that set the mood of the game perfectly. From the star-filled skies to the many often useless translator messages and from the Nali villages to the many crashed spacecrafts. It all held true to some kind of story. There were clear differences between the skaarj and the krall,
-enemies with (back then) very realistic Artificial Intelligence and different approaches.
-some brilliant level design, even by today's standards. The sunspire is still the best singleplayer map I've ever seen. But that isn't to say that Nali heaven, Bluff eversmoking or the nali castle are anything less than absolute Quality. Heck, even the worst map is quality compared to what some other games have to offer.
-multiplayer!!! :D Or at least a deathmatch variant that could be played offline (playable internet was still years in the future for me).

Oh, and...what are people talking about when they talk of a spiritual sequel? It has one...

...

Return to Na Pali. :D

(agreed, it was a bit short, but everything that made the original worth playing nicely continued with this sequel)

Before Unreal, I didn't really care much for the FPS genre. I played a few of the big titles released prior to Unreal like Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein and Hexen and none of them really did anything for me. Zilch, nada. The only enjoyment I got out of them was on a LAN setup with a few friends.

Unreal totally changed my perspective of the FPS genre. Granted, it was the multiplayer that first caught my eye (incidentally, it was also the first game I played online), but the single player campaign was the first FPS experience I actually enjoyed. It was just...different. All of the above mentioned titles felt boring, bland and lifeless to me, whereas Unreal was the complete opposite. It had atmosphere, an awesome soundtrack (music and sound effects), gorgeous graphics and interesting level design. Unfortunately, very few games have managed to recreate a similar experience for me since then.

Wow, ten years. I still remember the first time I played the game... and the first time I played it online. I feel old now.

I remember when Unreal was out...I didn't know anything about the game, it was the case with red and green eyed monsters that interested me. XD I asked my mom for it, but I was too young to play it then :'(

These sounds as someone asked, original Unreal in its first release versions prior to 220 when the new sounds which also ut uses came and before there appeared the separated packages, UnrealI.u and UnrealShare.u.

Sounds and a lot of other things were changed during that.
It is sad that separation of packages led to some bugs like you canot hear waterstep sounds in the chizra entrance pool of passage, or the default textures in nalic, because they were originally in UnrealI.

I also don't know why they broke powershield, it was more balanced when in dm, it started lovering down its charge by seconds and then it ran out. That was the difference between shieldbelt and powershield aside from charge.

So the custom maps which used powershield back then, it was balanced, but when you run same maps again now, its unbalanced, because powershield does not lose its energy by default anymore and you have 200 points of invulnerable shield, which makes it really unfair to play against that kind of loaded player.

DP was more effective and had sparks effect too, etc.

Unreal is what made me go out and get 2 3dfx Voodoo2 cards. The editor that came with it was also the first time I realized "hey, this is something even I can do!".

Unreal will always have a spot in my Top 3 games just because of the inspiration it gave me.

I'd love to see Epic return to their roots and produce a kick ass TRUE sequel to one of the greatest games of all time.

This game not only lays the foundations for Unreal but it's still one of the best games to play coop!! Definitly had an impact on my life. If there is an Unreal 3, do it right this time

Yeah, another bad sequel would actually be worse than none at all.

But i fear they would not make a good sequel, if you look at U2 and GOW, and what we have seen of GOW2 aswell, they seem to go for a more cramped, liniar and scripted approach with their SP games thease days, with a more dark atmosphere, none of that would fit an Unreal game, and i'd rather not see another Unreal game like that.

SP shooters are a lost art, they just dont make them like they used to, nobody does, including Epic.
