People love their gun porn too much. Think of the big TCs that came out for UT. Almost all of them were realism mods.

Counter-Strike was a huge "me too" influence and so was Bid for Power for all those DBZ mods. The current flavor of the week is STILL "lets make zombie game" and has been for a long time. :/

Fortunately zombie games aren't competitive and are usually nothing more than "lets fight dumbed fuzzy logic" so I guess we can rule that crap out.

As a hobbyist level designer, I disagree.

If there's one thing Epic Games always has done right it's their engine.

Oh no, UE is one of the best in the biz. I just meant to say that improved tools won't lead to shorter dev cycles. Games are getting more and more complex to make, even the best tools in the world won't offset that -- talking from the usual big budget production perspective here, indies are a bit more nimble there.

So you're basically saying no engine will do jackshit.

Tools are the number one thing that cuts development time down. You can throw all the manpower and money you want at something, your tools and pipelines are always the limiting factor.

a lot of game studios are really inefficient.
Just look at the graphical fidelity bohemia is managing to pull off with arma3 or arma 2 at launch.
Sure these games were buggy but they were made with a fraction of the budget any cod was made with.

They really weren't. Do you have any idea how much money gets poured into military simulation software? It's how Crytek managed to expand so quickly without putting out any games. ARMA is a side effect of a real product.

Nice vulgar extrapolation there, you should become a politician

Sure they're a limiting factor, i'm not denying that. If Weta upgrades their pipeline it will be more efficient, but no single employee is going to make Lord of the rings simply by having ungodly efficient tools. Planning, structure, expertise, art direction etc are all just as important. Having more gizmos and a cleaner ui in your map editor isn't going to halve your individual dev time when you're going from 512 textures to having to model individual eyelashes on every character. And these things are all design decisions.

No, he's saying the gaming world is ruled by companies that can afford chinese labor.

:D
