Reminds me of fight club. A while back at another forums I made a 'joke' (as in meant funny but I also stood by it) that "they are making games I don't want so that I buy hardware I don't need". Usually these things don't bother me, just like the newest in bling bling or mobile phones does not bother me. But for games it's a bit different, if you want to play the newest game that is worth your while you are still going to need the newest hardware.

I'm not entirely sure where I stand in this discussian, but I do think there will be a game recession soon. Probably after the next gen consoles. If there would be a recession the time after this would be very interesting though, just like what happened after the last one.

Yes, please.
At this point, Quake IV and UT2007 are planned for Xbox 360, and since the high-end gaming rig I would be using for those game got stolen durring christmas break, now it looks like an XB360 might be more economical for me than another high-end PC. It looks like a lot more high-profile PC games are going to the next gen consoles, so maybe keeping up with all the latest PC hardware won't be necessary anymore. The only thing missing is mods, but who knows, with hard-drives becoming standard on consoles, maybe there will be mods too.

Gnam I heard rumors of UT2007 coming to all 3 consoles. To be honest I won't get a new UT unless it's alot different. I just had my fun with it and can't see another really.
On xbox360, both PS3 and the Rev will probably be around the same speed if not faster. Of course they will both come out later. It's the price that has me. If the xbox360 is going to cost like 200 euros, then I see so little reason not to get one just because.

Ros, is that like making a mini-industry for manufactured ringtones, when you can get a program for $15 and make your own?

I'm affraid I have no idea what you mean. Might have to do with me running away from ringtones. Might have to do with me being tired. In any case, I don't get it.

Have you noticed that Consoles are becoming more and more like PC? Hard drives, net play and such.

Realistically, are PC games gonna be phased out?
not likely...

Burger, at lasts years E3 PC's were hard to find. When it comes to gaming, PC's will be phased out. It's so much easier to make games for consoles. Altough of course PC gaming won't end all the big companies will turn to consoles for profit. Not sure if that means that PC games won't be good anymore since big companies make sequals all the time anyway :p

Not true, C. Consoles are already sold at a loss it's with the games that they make a profit anyway. Now my biggest problem with this raw power bit is that it is at the same time harder to make games for it making the end result the exact same. Wish their first priority would be something that is easy to work with and the second power, not the other way around. This way everything gets more expensive. Hopefully not for the consumer.

I don't think it is a matter of game companies wanting to make modding more difficult, rather they would like it to be easier. One or two mods can give a game much more shelf life.

The problem is the demand for more and more eye candy for the rather large audience who think great graphics=great game.

Modding tools and work flow is becoming more and more complex.

What do you care about the shell life of a game when you release a new version of it every year or so...

I have to disagree with you there geogob. Since 2004 was 90% backward compatible with 2003 the vast majority of the mods developed for 2003 ported right over. This means that the shelf life of 2004 is extended by all the mods developed for 2003.

jay that was the original idea but with the changes to the netcode and especially the GUI it forced mod makers to do a lot more work porting it over, and a lot of mods just sank without trace without that kind of time, UnrealSpeed to name one (not seen Kaoh for ages :/).

I would love to play Infiltration on a PS3 ;). I'm done buying computers for gaming. If it won't run on my 1Ghz PowerBook Ti or 400Mhz PII system, I probably won't be interested. America's Army runs great on my PB, but it's no replacement for Infiltration.

(BTW, anyone have an unused motherboard/CPU/memory setup lying around? Say, Athlon T-bird, PC133?)

I do believe modding is on a steady decline but people will always want to customize and or make games independantly. I wouldn't be surprised if someone started marketing budget gaming engines to "indie game developers". Just like every other form of entertainment, there will be a backlash against "the corporate hand ruining the gaming industry" followed by the creation of under ground gaming wherein small time people like SS develop less flashy, better quality games which will be bought out later and "franchised" like movies. (I admit this is already happening but there will be much more consumer support for no name game makers)

Quake1 and Quake 2 engines are both open source, and Nexuiz demonstrates
what can be done on the older engines. The Torque engine by Garage Games
is dirt cheap at $100, and features expansive landscapes, as seen in one of
it's earlier forms in Tribes 2.

The options are out there for Sentry Studios to release the next INF
completely independant of any game or to continue modding for any engine
that is out there right now, if they so choose to do so. In the end, it is up to
them to determine the engine, and actually start writing a mod, or just quit
and go on to something else.
