Epic Games Brings Unreal Engine 3 to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

‘Epic Citadel,’ world’s First UE3-Powered iOS App, Now Available on App Store

Cary, NC, September 01, 2010 — CARY, N.C. – September 1, 2010 – Epic Games, Inc. today announced its “Epic Citadel” App is now available from the App Store. The app showcases the technical capabilities of Epic’s award-winning Unreal Engine 3 on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. In “Epic Citadel,” players navigate a fictional castle realm using simple controls and the innovative Multi-Touch user interface. “Epic Citadel” also features stunning visuals and special effects, with an environment inspired by “Project Sword,” Epic’s newest game.

“Project Sword” is the codename of the all-new action role-playing adventure game exclusively for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch developed by Epic’s critically acclaimed studio, Chair Entertainment, creators of the Xbox LIVE Arcade games of the year “Undertow” and “Shadow Complex.” Scheduled for release later this year, “Project Sword” will bring unrivaled visual fidelity and a highly accessible gameplay experience to the iOS platform.

“This is a testament to the sheer power of iOS devices as up until now, Unreal Engine 3 has typically been used to create high-end gaming experiences on game consoles and computers,” said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps. “And we’re not just keeping it to ourselves. We’re putting Unreal Engine 3 technology into the hands of game developers all over the world, and we can’t wait to see the apps they make next.”

A small team of Epic’s programmers, artists and testers created “Epic Citadel” in just eight weeks of development time. Unreal Engine 3 is scalable yet packed with the same tools hundreds of thousands of users work with to create games, simulations and animated content. Features include:

  • Amazing visuals. “Epic Citadel” pushes the envelope for stunning visuals on iOS devices. Through the latest advances in Unreal Engine 3 technology, the application delivers unrivaled graphics and special effects that immerse players in the kingdom’s grounds.
  • Bump offset mapping. Also known as parallax mapping or relief mapping, bump offset mapping enhances the visual appearance of stone walls and rocks providing intricate textures.
  • Normal mapped architecture. Brings stunning detail to bricks and ground surfaces within the environment.
  • Texture blending with painted weight maps. Refines nuances on roads and terrain, making them rich and lifelike.
  • Global illumination. Unreal Engine 3’s built-in global illumination system, Unreal Lightmass, provides realistic lighting and shadows with minimal development resources.
  • Dynamic specular lighting with texture masks. Helps create authentic cobblestone roads and vivid reflective marble surfaces, while lens flares and light coronas add dramatic emphasis when panning across light sources.
  • Real-time reflections and animation. Environment mapping enables real-time reflections on objects such as the statue inside the cathedral. Dynamic movements of trees and banners are made possible through the use of vertex deformation and skeletal animation.
  • Free tools. Epic’s Unreal Development Kit (UDK), available for free download at http://www.udk.com/download, ships with the same tools and technologies used to create Epic Citadel.

“Epic Citadel” is available for free from the App Store on iPad, Phone and iPod touch. For more information about “Epic Citadel,” visit http://www.epic-citadel.com.

First thing I thought:

''Wii can't handle UE3''

Probably been brought up a few times already, but still. Even back then it was obviously disingenuous. A good reporter should ask them about this some day.

It looks amazing, though. Whether you care about it or not, you have to admit something is impressive when it is. There is simply no comparison graphically between this and any other mobile game.

Not bad, but I would actually prefer it if they bough this to Windows 7 Phone. Might be interesting linking it up with your 360 or something.

Eh, what's the point of beefing up the graphics, when it is the controls that so sorely needs attention?

Gaming on iPhones and the like just isen't going to be worth much untill they get some kind of controller, maybe something you can snap on to the device so you still hold it propperly, but without that, the only thing that's going to play well are basic puzzle games and the like, and UE3 is overkill for that.

To the iOS Device owners, only the iPod Touch 3G and iPhone 3Gs/4 are able to run The Citadel map, the older version won`t even install it.

The controls on this actually aren't that bad. They would work great for an Oblivion-like game.

Why doesn't the Android OS get this kind of love?

Yeah, I know. And I guess the same would go for Android, and stuff like that as well, right?

Yeah, I mean, of course we pay attention to where the other tech is going and we have support for Tegra-based devices, and a lot of Androids are Tegra-based. But I just shook hands with Steve Jobs, so right now, I'm pretty high on Apple! (laughs)

Real nice graphic wise, but if the gameplay involves lots of finger swipping that obscures the screen just to move or even look then forget it...

Would they consider using tilting for mouelook at least?

They are considering neural links instead of tilt.

The game looks great from what I've seen, stunning compared to what is actually out for the platform.
But come on. Epic Games is still a PC centric company?
I know they got the UDK with the monthly beta coming out regularly, but the only game coming from them right now is Bulletstorm, and that is indirectly through whoever it is (Sorry, a little tired now) that's making it. And I hate to think about it but I'm doubting Bulletstorm will have stuff like a great UI for PC (Considering the background of the whole thing) as well as graphics options that are easily tweakable (Took patch 2.0 for UT3 to get a sample of that) and a bunch of other stuff.
On the other side, they've got this whole let's go mobile craze thing, as well as console exclusives like Gears of War. I mean sure, I can respect that, they're pushing technology forward, they make money, and we get more great games out of it. Right?
Not so. Because Bulletstorm is the only game from Epic that I'll see on my PC. I won't be able to play Gears 3, still am not able to play Gears 2, and I won't see that Citadel demo game from those other people at Epic (Again, sorry I can't remember) because I don't have an iPhone (Could probably get one 'cause contract is going out soon, but it's gonna be kind of useless as I basically need just a phone.)
So I'm kind of fifty/fifty on this whole thing, and trolling Mark Rein with his quote a little about the myth surrounding Epic Games having left the PC.
Again, I understand about this whole shift, they're a business and operating in multiple sectors is better than in only one (Unless you spread yourself too thin, which they aren't doing as they keep buying more people.) But please think of your roots Epic, that's all I'm asking. Don't make the UT3 mistakes with Bulletstorm. Make it great for us.

Just as a side note, Chair Entertainment is developing this, not Epic themselves.
