[Ubuntu] Help me, damn it!!

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

hmm, try this on the terminal;

Code:
mkdir ~/ntfs
mount -t ntfs-3g -o ro /dev/sdb1 ~/ntfs
this should make a directory in the current home called ntfs and try to mount it read-only, and show you any errors in the process. If it can't find 3g try just "-t ntfs" or don't give it a -t and it'll try to auto detect

Probably worth mentioning that we ended up trying to diagnose further on IRC, where this
Code:
mount -t ntfs-3g -o ro /dev/sdb1 ~/ntfs
gave the error
Code:
Unexpected clusters per mft record (-1).
Failed to startup volume: Invalid argument
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sdb1' doesn't have a valid NTFS.
Maybe you selected the wrong device? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/hda, not /dev/hda1)? Or the other way around?

After some research turned up;

Last thing I got from Al before I went to bed was he was going to go run
Code:
chkdsk /r C:
fixmbr \device1\harddisk1
We managed to get those assignments from 'map'

Kenji: This was the error: The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.

:O

[edit] Just did fixmbr \device\harddisk1 and it appeared to work, but when I rebooted, it went back to Grub :confused:

Grub probably went to the other hard drive then, which by the sounds is first in the boot sequence (which would explain windows being on sdb rather than sda) go tweak the boot order and windows should be back... Incidentally, this means you can probably use the F12 -> BIOS Boot menu, in a weird roundabout fashion now.

Kenji: Was that English? :p
lol

Come to think of it, GRUB's entry for windows should work now, so long as it's pointing at the right partition
If you can get into Ubuntu;
System, Administration, Startup-Manager
(or if it's not there, you should be able to get it or 'grubed' from the package manager)

Also on some motherboards you can F11/12 and get a boot menu up which let's you boot to another Hard Drive, you could use this if ubuntu doesn't load up, to get to the windows partition/drive

Edit; On the off, that was complete gibberish to you again, jump back on IRC :p

Update. I wasn't able to salvage anything off that drive (I was able to save my second drive though). I probably could have, but I was too pissed off lol

Anyway, it's a bitch reinstalling everything you once had. And not to mention having to play all the games you had again to get to the point where you once were (Fallout 3 :().

I, Sir Al, will never install Linux again.

Not only did you fail so hard that fail itself failed, but shaved your beard and now you're gay.
