The REAL origin of Christmas......

it all started as a pagan holiday by the name of Winter Solstice. and later when the ruling religion of rome and what not became christianity early christians abopted this holiday as their own and altered it a bit to fit their religion. your opinions?

It's about this Chris Kringle dood that has this gig he does every December 25'th. He's one fast vato that has this sharp candy apple red sled pulled by flyin' reindeer. Him and his old lady live up on the North Pole and with the help of some illegal aliens, named Elves, make toys for all the good little boys and girls in the world. Or atleast close to what I understand it to be according to Cheech and Chong.

They didn't ADOPT the holiday. Early Christians created Christmas to attempt to overshadow the pagan holiday.

christmas is dead simple and dead old, its winter, when it the shortest day of the year, right on christmas, so were the ancient people happy when the days started to grow again, yes they were, cause spring would come, so what did they do, yes they celebrated it, the christian stuff just stole the date so they could easyer convert the people to their believe.....

I really dont want this to turn into a flame war, but it is a pagan holiday Fuzz. they did the whole thing with the tree and gifts too. i think pagans/wiccans still celebrate it today.

Well, uhhhhhh....the shortest day of the year is Dec 21. Christmas is on the 25th. Maybe they were lazy like me and it took a few days to get around to it.

Hmmm...

I believe it all depends on what you mean by "origion of the holiday". You see if you're refering to why it was traditionally decided to celebrate Christmas on the particular date that we do or where some of the customs (such as the christmas tree and festive lights....) come from then I would have to agree with some of Lucifix and Hourences assertions about those customs having pagan roots. If however we are to address the orgion of the meaning of Christmas (or Christ-Mass), it has nothing to do with pagans or their beliefs. When someone says that Christmas is a pagan holiday, they are dead wrong. I also believe that such a statement can be seen as flawed if you seperate the meaning (traditional and excepted) of Christmas and the standard secular trappings associated with it. Christmas is celebrated to signify the birth of The Lord Jesus who is Christ (or the anointed one) and savior. What date was He actually born? I don't know and to be honest it doesn't matter anyway since we choose to celebrate it on Dec.25. In fact it's not an uncommon practice to celebrate a birthday (or some other important event) on another date for doing so takes away nothing from the actual occasion. So, Christmas was always about the birth of Jesus even if some of the customs were not.

The Romans were in the habit of adopting slightly different forms of holidays and theology into their culture, making it easier for people to make the conversion from thinking of themselves as [whatever] to "Roman". I wouldn't be surprised if several holidays were originally pagan.

It was originally a pagan festival, but this doesnt mean that Jesus wasnt born at that time as well. It could just be a coincindence. Also, there were pagan festivals at many different times, somewhere in the world i'm sure every day was a festival of some sort, so the fact that christmas day was is no suprise. It should make those "christianity is the only true religion...dont ask why" people think twice though.
