If you want no icons at all, right click on desktop then go to "arrange icons by" and uncheck "show desktop icons"

Thats how to do it for XP, I'm not sure if it's the same for Vista though.

But that's not what I want to do. Trust me, I know how to get rid of desktop icons if that's all I wanted to do.

I wanted to try a "minimal" amount, not go without them completely.

i get rid of desktop icons by organising my files so I never need them on the desktop. click and drag any you need to the start menu.
Be selective though

Right, exactly, I'm being selective.

The setup as you see it in that pic is the most minimal I can get it while still having swift, uninterrupted access to the items I use most regularly; the way I did just prior to switching to this style.

The most important stuff is in the Quick Launch bar next to the Start menu. Everything else I would need at any given time that isn't there is in the primary Start menu pop-up.

Yeah, I like the color variety and how sharp the quality is.

thank you, my thoughts exactly.

Decided to actually try something that wasnt standard windows fare. Rearranging your desktop is about as fun as choosing top friends in myspace - That is to say, you loathe yourself for spending time doing it but feel so satisfied at the same time.

Ah, I get around this by using a dock at the top of the screen with all the programs that I use. ;)

Terrible compression followed by tinypics resizing from 1680x1050 to 1600x1000.

Also Koenigsegg CCX > your silly hemi's and lambs :)
Even the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG BLack Series is above those. The noise from those is just epic.

Let's see how this new setup goes. I just cleared 10+ gigs of crap off my desktop. D:

I'm using ObjectDock because it's better than RocketDock in every way that I've seen. I have it set to do no animation and to show permanently but only behind other windows, so it's kinda like it's pinned to the desktop, but it will come forward if I put the mouse at the top edge of the screen. It's only using about 3.2 MB memory at this point, so I'm satisfied thus far.

I use Launchy at work and it's great but I don't like it at home for some reason. D:

Jack: Try the ObjectDock menu from Stardock (It's Free!)

http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/

^ I personally would go for the RocketDock version

http://rocketdock.com/

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I'm fine with the way I've got my desk now. Just using standard Windows capability like the quick-launch bar and reorganizing my Start menu is all I need for that clean, minimal icons look.
No need for any additional program.

I've got my processes down to only 26 at any given time and that's the way I like it.

P.S. Jacks: your avatar is the shizzle!

Hey thanks! I agree.

anywho, I tried to refrain for awhile from choosing another Aston Martin image because they're so popular. but I couldn't hold out any longer, some of those pics are just too good.

Yeah they are. In fact I still use the one Twisted Metal posted a few pages back. I've been using it for a damn while. Every time I go to something else I always get back to it.
