GeneralZur, you make good posts. Please elaborate on how YOU will prevent martial law, terrorism or civil war in Europe in the near future. Do you even know what happened in Yugoslavia?

News is just in that the killer's lawyer is saying that the guy is a mental case.

As for preventing anything, I don't pretend to know any solutions.

If anything, drawing a "sanitary cordon" around the extreme right wing like they do here is a big mistake as it's a good indicator of public unrest. Some things that could be done to avoid tension are as follows:

1) Focusing on keeping a decent standard of living would be a good first step. The financial world should not have the capacity (at least not instant...) of hurting economies to the point where thousands of jobs can be lost.

2) Facilitate social integration on all levels whether it's young people waiting to make a mark in the professional world or immigrants looking to settle in.

I won't venture beyond that because any measures to ensure security will eventually hit up against some democratic principles.

In passing, have you heard of the "secret army"? It was (is?) a strategy by the USA to have an immediate presence in Europe just in case communism started to take root. It could be seen as a conspiracy theorist's wet dream but there are some official documents insinuating that some acts were used to manipulate local governments and public opinion. Some have gone so far as to say that Brabant Killers who opened fire in a Belgian supermarket in the 80s may be the visible part of the iceberg in that they seemed carefully trained.

I think the important thing with this incident is to lock the guy up & forget his name as far as possible.

If this had happened in the Congo [oh the irony] no one would care.

As for splinter/sleeper cells, yeah there probably are but frankly it's access to the weapons that's the problem rather than any training.

Perhaps. To this day none of the gang members have been found. As wikipedia states, one of the suspects was part of the Gendarmerie (armed police) which if ever verified would mean easier access to weapons. There is also the hypothesis that this was an attempt to destabilize the government.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nijvel_gang

In 2006, in the south of France, the houses of several notorious criminals were searched in order to find a new lead. Among these suspects was the criminal and former Gendarmerie member Madani Bouhouche, who died a few months before the house-search in a chainsaw accident while cutting a tree in his garden.

The gang carried out armed robberies of restaurants, stores, supermarkets and one weapons depot. What set the gang apart was their readiness to commit murder for no reason and their apparent lack of a normal criminal orientation towards stealing the maximum amount of money for the minimum risk. This led to suspicions that it represented an effort to destabilize the country coming from disgruntled members of the Belgian Gendarmerie ("Rijkswacht" in Dutch, "Gendarmerie" in French), a paramilitary police force then supervised by the Belgian Minister of Defense. Some of the weapons used to carry out the murders had been stolen from a Belgian Gendarmerie arsenal in 1979.

I more meant that 'we' all know how to mount attacks, use cover, etc, etc due to 'training' with FPS games & not being thick/mental in the first place.

If these attacks tell us anything it's that the people carrying them out have mental problems because if it was me or you doing it given access to the same weapons/ammo the body count would be way higher.

A terrorist is a terrorist regardless of skin color and faith... being closed minded and promoting a fundamentalist view points (or ultra nationalist as this guy) leads to crazy shit happening....

Everything in moderation....

Sometimes I wish that the Mayans are hopefully right and this all ends....the world in general is one pathetic place...where the closed minded, hate filled, and ignorant people (on all sides) get their voice heard or do stupid shit to everyone else. Those that do good in this world, again regardless of skin color, nationality, and faith, always go unrecognized, as we watch the world slowly burn and kill it self over various ideals, beliefs, politics, and philosophies.

Yes, what kind of fucking scumbag moron kills innocent people like this? Call me whatever you want, but this almost brought tears to my eyes last Sunday when I spend proper time watching the news and saw the tragedy (I actually considered sending some flowers to the Norwegian embassy too).

Either way, yes, he's not worse than the shit that Muslim Jihad groups or NATO/U.S. puts out. You have to see terrorism from the angle of the victim and not the killer, not falling for moral relativity BS.

I suspect that the wish of ending it all, is exactly the less moderated perspective I've ever seen :p

The world in general is not one pathetic place. The Western World is decaying and the Islamic world slowly became garbage when this lame cult came along. Besides, I also dislike bringing skin color or ethnic group, when the motivation was directly and clearly Islam, it's another obfuscation or distraction. Am I at least allowed to bash the white Muslims for their retarded religion?

This is speculation, but... http://www.eutimes.net/2011/07/norway-premier-begged-putin-to-stop-massacre-planned-by-elites/
To the reason(s) behind this attack, this FSB report states, is a “desperate attempt” by British, European Union and American banking interests to force Norway into their “union” [Norway is not a member of the EU] in order to loot their Sovereign Wealth Fund of its estimated $1.5 Trillion in wealth which without the entire Western economy may collapse.
