i just checked the ballistic classes. You guys will have a ball with this one. Apparently, the FAMAS, M16, and SIG ballistics have exactly the same characteristics except the SIG does 5% less damage. Here are the variables that distinguish the ballistics:

Haha Duke, I guess you just missed the chance to:

- make all the moaners happy
- stut down discussion about ballistics
- make people fall in love with UT99 again

by not making a small lie about ballistic classes ;)

If you posted parameters according to real world muzzle velocities everybody would have been happy and nobody would have found out the truth anyway

Maybe it's just me but I think the biggest problem with the new suppressed weapons is that they have no muzzle flash whatsoever... From what I know (not much :p) a supressor on an m4 or m16a4 will not make you 100% invisible on a nightmap, while lieing in a shadow.

And I agree with the sound too. The damage does not really bother me, but I always thought supressors for carbines and such didn't help too much for supressing sound and muzzle flash, just a bit. That was also the impression I had when using the FAMAS sd...

Hah. Well, that is amusing. At least I feel vindicated in agreeing that ballistic modelling ultimately meaningless in an engine as stupidly imprecise as UT99.
I don't see how inprecision has anything to do with it.

When coming up with ballistic values, I didn't bother to come up with alternate 5.56mm numbers, chalk it up to lazyness, fear of screwing up, lack of info, or all three. The fact it's on the UT engine has no bearing - the ballistics system is accurate enough to make the distinctions.

Honestly, when I'm playing a game that doesn't even have the precision to allow me to aim a weapon without running my mouse across a rough 'grid' of acceptable positions and determines hit locations based on a big, wildly inaccurate cylinder, it seems like ballistic modeling is going to take a backseat. Yes, it's noticable. As anything more than a vaguely interesting academic endeavor? Not really.

first off, while yes the mouse interface is technically a grid, trying to stretch it into sound like your aiming on a checkerboard just makes you sound like an *******, though not as much as degrading yurch's ballistics work when you're too much of an cocky ass to look around the forum and find this

I know you're not actually illiterate, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and simply suggest you reread my last post. You know, considering I never once insulted yurch's work.

If you don't think its insulting to say someone's hard work is completely pointless you seriously need to work on your people skills

I hadn't tried using the new M4 yet, but I have somehting to point out:
The box of my earplugs lists 30 db reduction. I remember reading that suppressor for M4 also does 30 db reduction (I think was on isayeret.com). Now when wearing earplugs, the sound is far from "hard to hear".

Second what?
I failed to understand your post :p
Anyway there must be a way to know exactly how much it reduces the sound. Also regular gunfire sounds should be much louder :p

Nobody (exept for your landlord or your otologist maybe) is keeping you from attaching your machine to a 1000 W stereo, pumping the volume all the way up and playing at 250% RL gunsound volume ;)

... but of course step sounds would be little loud as well ...

my point exactly :p
When u hear lots of gunfire it should be much much louder than footsteps even at long ranges. Right now gunshot noise is improportional to footstep noise.
And I thought db was a amplifying unit, meaning that if an amplifier amplifies something X times, u can say it amplies in 20logX db. But I could be wrong.
If I'm right u solve 20logX=30 (which I forgot how to solve) and divide the volume of current gunshot (after making it loud enough) by X.
