Suggestion regarding the Featured Map

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

I think that the short review excerpt that goes along with the Featured Map box on the front page should be explicitly chosen to be sure it fulfills its intended purpose as a brief summary of the map, rather than simply using the first sentence of the review every time. Right now we have DM-Paganda as the Featured Map, and its summary reads, "This one has been floating around in the review queue for a long time until I found it last night." It says absolutely nothing about the map, and as such it seems an odd piece of information to have on the front page.

Since I can't edit the Hotlist, I'm not sure whether the editor manually specifies the text to be used there, or if he just enters the name of the Featured Map and relies on a bit of code to automatically extract the summary from the review. If the latter then I'll understand if it's not changed, since I know MC is a busy guy and I don't want to make any more work for him. I'd offer to do it myself except that I don't know anything about PHP.

Another question: is the score shown for a Featured Map the review score, or the overall score, taking the user point into account? If it's the raw review score, then we ought to change the text "(1-10)" to "(0-9)" since that's the actual range a reviewer has available to him. After all, Featured Maps always have high scores, and while a 1/9 and a 1/10 are nearly equally terrible scores, an 8/9 is considerably more impressive than an 8/10, because the gap between the score and the top of the range is halved.

If the score given for the Featured Map is the overall, user-adjusted score, perhaps we should have "(0-10)" up there for the sake of accuracy, even though I seriously doubt we'll ever feature a map with a composite score of less than 1.0. :)

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

That is so confusing, WTF are you saying in one sentence ?

Also eternalsands and folos are NOT that "hot" to be in hotlist, seems better playing and looking maps around, but i suppose they got to pick somthing.

Wow... takes more than 3 years for someone to point out that the scale on the Featured Map (1-10) is wrong. The score shown is the overall score, which takes into account the +/-1 of the user rating. The scale should be 0-10. But anything as lower than 6.5 should never be a featured map.

As far as the preview text... it is the first sentence of the review. There is no easy way to fix that because there is no storage for that information. The preview text is only stored temporarily while the map is featured. Though a fix for this would be a good thing to consider for NC4.

Reviewers should always try to write a somewhat decent first line, specially when it are maps that might become MOTM.

The score is indeed correct because it is a scale of 10. The discussion has been done over and over again because yes an 8/9 is a big difference with a 8/10 and indeed does create some confusion
The discussion was a dead end last time + you dont just suddenly change a review scheme

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, but I wasn't asking for a change in the review schema. In fact, the last time we had this discussion that I remember, I argued for keeping the schema the way it is. :) I was just uncertain of which score was being displayed in the Featured Map box, and since it is an overall score (out of a possible ten points rather than nine), we don't need to change anything.

MC: I should have realized that the text in that box might not be stored separately. That makes sense. As you say, it might be worth considering for future incarnations of the site, but I agree that it's not worth worrying about now if there's no easy fix. Thanks for the explanation.
