Conquest maps with capital ships, fighters, space stations to be conquered, Tarydium convoys, planetary landings...

Not to mention that the space combat in AS-Mothership was sort of an afterthought and not very cool.

The main trouble with that stuff is that spacefighters always tend to end up moving like airplanes, and airplanes are always wholly unsatisfactory in FPS games... they move too slow (ie, top speed isn't high enough and min speed is always miles below stall) and in general look dorky and don't function like they do in the real world.

IMO UT2004's choice of making the flying vehicles function more like helicopters was an outstanding one, it's got a much more convincing feel.

So yeah, I voted no... not because I wouldn't like to see it done right, but because I think it would suck.

They already have one map with space combat in UT2004, I think it would be a good idea for them to include it in UT2007, as a Conquest map....eh...not really a good Idea, how would you play Onslaught in space? it wouldn't be very fun because you cannot travel without a vehicle. as to Discord's comment, those things could be fixed but the general concept of it I think could be good if done properly.

Yes, I would like to have 1 or 2 conquest maps in UT2007, but the spacefighters should have a lot more abilities, in UT2004 they are too simplistic and quite boring... ;) If they do it well, it will be fun. :D

I'd say if it takes a lot of extra time to do it well - skip it. I'd rather have some very solid conventional type maps.

Agreed. I'd be really happy to see it as a quality mod, though.

*edit* With big, 50s- style glass dome helmets and rebreathers tacked onto the playermodels. Now THAT would rock.

The many days/weeks of being unable to get past AS-Mothership (while spending credits everytime) totally put me off that kinda combat. It'd be great if it works but let's leave it for UT2010 or so :D

I say yes, and I love Freespace and Descent btw, too bad they died. Freespace 2 got 9.4 on GS just like UT did too. I loved those games.

Well I'd like it if they had the ability to get out of the ships and maybe be able to run on the actual ships (Gravity Boots) but overall the whole game seemed to pull away from the fun and it made me feel like quitting the game. I'm sure a lot of people liked it but I got bored with it fast the really big ass assault maps by the way.

I'll +1 on that one (and on Discord's first post as well). There are only 6 assault maps, and even then, mothership is hardly ever played.

I can't see for any reasonable way to have infantry and vehicles interact with each other like they do in 'normal' ONS-maps. That part of the equation is what would make space-based ONS-maps suck even if you managed to create decent space-based vehicles.

Also don't forget that in order for 'space' to be convincing the maps would have to be so huge that non-vehiclebased movement would become very very boring. They had enough problems in 'normal' sized ONS-maps because of that already.

It'd be a nice edition, if it was big big ships and you teleported to the other ones (wouldn't be nice to see a tank come in through the teleporter). Would be a nice theme, but no spacewalking...

I´d like to play something like that but it is too much work for Epic.

If well done I think SC can fit very well in a gametype like Conquest, but well done means joystick support, different space fighter types, good bot support, players captaining ships, etc.

I voted yes anyway.:D

New Breed

Anyone here remember Breed? It was an FPS game that came out a little while ago. I tried the Breed Beta and it had a lot of great ideas, but overall they were poorly executed. One nice ability it did have, was that each map went from space, right down through the atmosphere down to the ground (with a transition points halfway down), so fighters/dropships would start off on a transport ship in orbit and then go the whole way down, and the other side could either wait for tem low level either in the atmosphere of on the ground, or they could go up into space to take the attackers on head-to-head. It didn't work for Breed, mainly because the throttle system on it's vehicles sucked so hard (one of the biggest flaws with the game IMO), which was a massive shame, becuase the vehicles were actually very, very cool.

Space combat can be left out IMO.

When I want to play space combat, I play games/simulations which are fully designed for such things.

This doesn`t really fit into the FPS genre. Riding with vehicles was done quite good and funny but the "planes" are also a little bit weird, could also be left out.
