hey Arokh.
if you ever start that DSG thing im in for sure.
In CTF i can usually do good both on d and offence. but what usually happens is all the players go off and get killed while tryin just to get the flag. maybe they think they will get a better score. lets see: you get 0 for gettin the flag, 0 for umm dropin the flag, 0 for being killed with the flag. now for d. 5 points EVERY time you kill the other teams flagger. 1 if you kill him befor he gets that flag. sure you wont get as much as the flagger who capped 8 times but your never last place if the other team has a bit of offence.
I love playing d, maybe cause thats what i played in little league hockey /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I prefer to be an offensive sniper. I always have the SR ready with a single key press. I love "displacing" the stationary defensive snipers by popping around a corner and taking their head before they know what hits them. I then switch back to my trusty rocket launcher and continue on my way.

If you ask me, stationary snipers are not the real hunters...they are the hunted. They are the only ones foolish enough to stand still. They make great targets for heat-seeking rockets or a head shot.

True, stationary snipers are easy targets. But a stationary sniper is a rookie sniper.

And I only really have two CTF maps where I'm a full time defensive sniper. And on both of these maps I can see the entire playing field and watch for players taking aim on me. On that lava pit level, I can see all four ways in to my base. And I watch closely for movement.

And I am in no way making a claim that I never get sniped. That would be a flat out lie on my part. (The best way to counter a sniper is with a sniper.)

But where I snipe from usually, heat seeking rockets would be useless because they're slow moving and I'd see them coming. So I'm not knocking your RL/SR offensive combo, but you'd be hard pressed to get a heat seeking rocket in on an experienced defensive sniper.

Only a foolish sniper keeps his FOV zoomed in, thus keeping his line of sight too tight to see things around him.

This conversation takes me back to my initial reason for posting. I like to be able to zoom in quickly and then zoom back out quickly. That is my only gripe about UT's sniper rifle. It zooms in too damn slow. I love sniping on Tribes servers because you can zoom in and out instantly. I was hoping someone had a way to get this sniper rifle to zoom in instantly. And I also love Tribes for the ability to vary your magnification quickly. With the sniper rifle in UT, if you stop zooming in for any reason, you have to zoom all the way back out before you can zoom in further again.

That really blows.

I believe the solution to your problem is with aliases in the command console. I am not yet familiar with the console of UT as I am with Q3, but I'm betting there is a variable for "zoom magnification." You can probably set this variable to a specific value and bind a key to that value, so you can get your "instant zoom" effect. You might also be able to script an up toggle and a down toggle for increasing the magnification after you have already zoomed (although I suspect this will be rather difficult at first).

I enjoy programming (it's also my profession), so I'm sure I could come up with a solution to this if someone were to guide me to the console commands which list all variables and which list all commands. Any ideas?

hmmm well theres a zoom = in the user.ini file .. not quite sure what it does tho *probably the obvious huh? :p* anyway .. you could always do the
bind f fov 50
bind c fov 110?
that switches instantly //*but you wont have the cool scope thing ..BUT i thought about that too .. not sure of the exact syntax but i think it would look like this..

Aliases[25]=(Command="fov 50 ; altfire",Alias=+fastzoom)

Aliases[26]=(Command="fov 110 ; altfire",Alias=-fastzoom)

*what i'm attempting to do here is 1.pressing whatever button will instantly push you to fov 50
2.it will also *hopefully* tap the altfire so you'll get the sniper crosshairs we all love -= well the snipers anyway woo-ha!=-
then bind fastzoom to a button .. if the plus and minus things work *ala Q2* you'll hold down the button to be zoomed if not.. the +will have to be one button and - another .. anyway in theory *or at least my mind :p* this should work .. email me if it does, i'll treat myself to a beer .. hmm .. wth i'll treat myself anyway!
oh eyah i almost forgot ...

HELL YEAH!!

I haven't examined this "zoom=" property yet (I didn't see one on my initial scan of the user.ini).

However, I've been looking at the SniperRifle class...and there are a LOT of variables in there. Unfortunately, nothing seems to speed it up any. I thought AltRefireRate variable, if increased, would zoom faster...but no luck. I've tried some other things, still with not much luck. But I will continue searching....
