How many more sequels can UT have anyway?

UT2005, eh... another so called possible ut title. But how much more can they (re)invent to keep the game entertaining and "fresh"...

I'm guess that the nex UT2KX title, whenever it comes out, will have some of the UC2 flavor to it, such as melee.

That's pure speculation on my part, though.

Yup like most other ppl I'm glad there's no UT2005... There's more than enough life in 2k4 to keep me happy for a couple more years and with Pariah, etc., looking very promising in the meantime, I'd rather wait and let Epic think out how they'll do the next one and work on new features, etc. :)

UT2004 has a lot of value left in it just from the awesome modding community's effort and the still very strong support of it's player community. No reason to worry about a UT2005. Echoing others, a nice bonus pack would be better recieved than a whole new game to buy anyways. Long live UT2004.

hahaha those online stores like to rip people off so badly, like when they started preorders for HL2 about 3-4 years ago.... you would be surprisd by how many people fell for it. Releaseing another UT this year would be a joke. UT2004 is already packed, Im not sure how they gonna top it in terms of content, so they probably go for a major overhaul of the engine and gamplay?. Theres Still plenty of mods and content comming from the community so there is no point.

I'm actually kind of glad really ... too many UTs in a span of just a few years could be bad. The original UT lasted for a good five years before it was replaced by UT2003/4. However, I would predict that the next UT would show up in another two years ... say UT2007 or 2008 which would take advantage of UnrealEngine3 and borrow some aspects of Unreal Championship 2 (eg. melee weapons) ... however, if they were to release a UT in 2006, it would probably build on top of UT2003/4.

Good! I feel they need to focus on other games and let the Tournament rest awhile.

Replaced? Guess you mean when people started showing real interest in the new ut games.
I hope so. Cause, hate to do this, Ut2003 was released in late 2002.
Then again, many people ditched the game afterwards.

Ut2004 saved the day °_-

But.. can it be done all over again?

Ut2005,UT2006-7..

I don't know. Just doesn't feel right.

I'm hoping that UT2004 is held together by the community even after Epic has moved on to UT200Whatever. I think it's a great platform for making games and mods with - and by the time the next gen comes around the production costs will probably eliminate the traditional idea of mods completely.

Now if we can just get people to -play- UT2004 mods...

I for one am very glad Epic is holding off on UT2005 for a couple reasons.

One: A good FPS game (or any PC game) and last for a few years or so as long as it's kept fresh by the company (bonus packs) and/or mods. UT2004 was a seriously needed "upgrade" to UT2003, but with the ECE version out there's no need to revamp the existing game just for the sake of it. I do hoipe Epic & Midway won't be talking the UT francise down the old Madden/FIFA route with a completely different game every year with slightly graphic & gameplay improvements. Now I can see UT2006 coming out considering it might use the new Unreal 3 engine...but can't just they call that UT 3 instead?

Two: The whole UT2003 to UT2004 switch was a major pain in the butt for a lot of mod teams. Epic "promised" the two games would be compatiable and then turn around at the 11th hour saying otherwise. Many large mod projects suffered setbacks as not just the code needed to be recompiled and tweaked but the mod menus and HUDs as well. Trust me, it was a major upset for the Unreal Fortress:Evolution team and we really wanted to release the mod for both UT2003 & UT2004. :(

I'm surprised anyone thought there would be a UT2005, it's common knowledge that the date-tag was just in keeping with the stupid "e-sports" idea introduced by UT2003 (to stand alongside such games as FIFA 2003 etc) rather than commitment to a yearly instalment, and that Epic are at work on an Unreal Engine 3-based UT game (which would mean there's no way we'll see anything earlier than UT2007 -released 2006-, assuming they decide to keep the date-tag on the next title).

I think, as someone pointed out earlier, that the purpose of the news post was not to announce to the world that "There will be no UT2005"... anyone who has been reading a little Unreal news in the past year will know that. The purpose of the news post was to warn people not to fall for the pre-order pages and placeholders that abound throughout the internet.

Good. As far as I'm concerned the ECE was UT2005 anyway. Glad to see they aren't jumping to ANOTHER new game already, UT2004 still has plenty left to work with.

Hmm, I'm looking at it and there could well be some clever word play.

There will be UT shipped in 2005.

Key word I noticed: shipped.

Had they said released then yeah, but the use of the word shipped indicates they might have a major download upgrade 2K4 -> 2K5 planned.

Remember a news post ages ago about the ripper being including back one day? Stuff like that would make great 2005 content.

I seriously doubt there is going to be a new UT-game ever, because it's next to impossible to improve the game at this point in time.
Pretty much any gametype we could want is already available either by default or as a mod.
All that's left is a new engine (= better graphics) and that's not something I'd want to see.

I'd rather see them attempt to create a new mp-game that's isn't burdened by the Unreal-legacy. One that can set it's own expectations, but with the advantage of all the lessons learned in the UT-series.
