Indeed.

The fact of the matter is that even the most blazoned psychologists can't accurately determine what you are thinking using NLP models, how can some guy that's been working in IT for 35 years and never even taken a psychology class in his life use them to any effect?

I'm not saying that people don't make assumptions about other people based on how they behave, but it's extremely short sighted to do so routinely. You simply can't get an idea of a person based on how they sit, what they do, how well they maintain eye contact, etc. It's more important to listen to what they say, understand how they think, ask them leading questions to understand their intelligence levels and such. NLP doesn't help one bit.

How can you say "You can't make assumptions about a person based on how they act while they are talking to you, it's stupid." Brizz? How else can you have any understanding of a person other than by observing how they behave. That's fairly basic, and it's completely natural for humans to attempt to rationalize.

Because trying to quantify it into a series of generalisations is a horrific assumption based upon the value of your own experiences. There are a lot of very distinct cultural and behavioural differences between people, even within discreet demographics.

It's like 'The Boy who Cried Wolf', just flipped the other way.

Well yerp, but that's what psychology does.

Oh Brizz yeah. I was thinking more like psychiatric assessment, but I never experienced a proper job interview.

The wiki article does not hesitate in putting the boot in:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuro-linguistic_programming said:
Recent attempts to create a phenomenological approach to research in NLP have been criticised by Gareth Roderique-Davies who states that "NLP masquerades as a legitimate form of psychotherapy, makes unsubstantiated claims about how humans think and behave, purports to encourage research in a vain attempt to gain credibility, yet fails to provide evidence that it actually works. Neurolinguistic programming is cargo cult psychology". Roderique-Davies also states that "despite the cloak of respectability, the truth about NLP borders on the worrying", and "NLP is an ill-defined chameleon that masquerades as a discipline open to the rigours of academic enquiry, when in fact there is spectacularly no evidence to support NLP beyond personal testimony and anecdote".

Psychology as a science has been on pretty shaky grounds from the beginning when it comes to things like objectively proving or disproving hypotheses. The more recent research involving the relationship between brain physiology and behavior is way more illuminating imho. Fascinating stuff, too.

Psychology in itself is ok although we could use less of it in the workplace too. NLP is not pure psychology though. It is was originally based on observations on how succesful people communicate or so I've been told. As such, it is probably only valid for north american or european cultures as well as the business world. It is by no means proven as something universal.

It doesen't belong in a job interview, Psychology is not an instant thing by any means, to get any real results or a usefull evaluation, a shrink would have to have several sessions with the person to get a feel for their personality and try many different things to see what works when dealing with that individual.

A drive-by psych evaluation is worth pretty much nothing, and doubly so when it is performed by a quack.
