New Windows Viruses

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

The recent incoming deluge of virus-laden emails here at BeyondUnreal tell me that, despite the damage that viruses can cause, many of you are still not running up-to-date anti-virus software on your (blecch) Windows computers.

The latest virus, MyDoom / Novarg, has kicked into high gear, spoofing emails from peoples' address books, while it installs and executes a trojan program on the infected computer. It spreads itself via email and Kazaa, and DOS attacks sco.com. More info here.

All of the major anti-virus software already cleans and protects against MyDoom, so please - run AV software of some sort, like the free AVG, and keep your virus definitions up-to-date. Better yet, run Linux...like the $39 Xandros 2.0. 'Nuff said.

I'm guessing you are using Xandros 2.0 nowadays? :) What's it like? Much better than 1.0 ?
I've tried 1.0 and thought it was really good, very easy to setup and use. But I have since then moved on to other distros.

Oh, I love the subtle anti-windowsism there. :p
Xandros 2 Is supposed to be pretty darn good from the reviews I've read. I personally like my Gentoo setup though and do not intend to step away from it any time soon. ;)

Btw, It's DoS attack. Sorry for being anal, pete, but case matters here. ;)

This is why I use a Mac for the majority of mail. Not only is the mail app better then Outlook, I don't have to worry about viruses. On the PC (which I use only for my POP based accounts) I use Eudora so I'm pretty safe there. It's too bad so many people use Outlook/Outlook Express. Viruses wouldn't be as much as a hassel. Just my thoughts.

There are Mac viruses, guy. Most companies offer a Mac solution, example:

I know there are viruses for the Mac. Hell, mail.app itself is incredibly suceptable to viruses thanks to it's deep AppleScript support. But no one creates Mac viruses. Why? They just don't.

I just wish Epic would include some better support for Unreal modding on Linux, UT2003 runs well on Linux, and there's no shortage of other games coming out with Linux compatibility, but the area of mod development is really really lacking unfortunately...

So I end up stuck to Windows 90% of the time for that reason alone :(

[Edit] And if anyone is in doubt about AVG, let me just say it's probably the best Anti-Virus program I've ever used.

2000 can be one of the most stable OS's out there =\ XP is by far the worst OS ive ever seen though....if this continues I might just go Mac or something...

it is, so many things are slapped onto XP, it bogs down performance much more than 2000, its much less Friendly if you want to fiddle with some of the more deep down settings, its generally made to function so you dont have to mess with it...if Id of had 2000, I would have been able to save my computer a prevent the system32 corruption by those damn polymorphic virals that forced me to reformat the HD...I could do alot more with 2000...

Theres a system recovery tool in XP, use it if you like to save your PC...
it's just BS to cry after win2k... install it if you like... I stripped my XP Pro down in terms of visuals and its nearly as fast as win2k, I had 4 'bluescreens' in 12 months, while I use my PC for programming, debugging etc, no problem so far...

I'm running 2000 and close to never have it crash, and I switched from 98 ( Unreal editor crashing every 5 minutes, consistantly  )

XP, imo Is slow. Brand new comp with xp and the bloody start menu is lagging :con:

no you dont understand man, Everything was corrupted, i was Astonished, I MIGHT have been able to get a backup copy of System32 if I had 2000, but XP, no dice, system recovery was dead, it had completely shut Down Norton AV, after a vicious Battle I was able to install Norton AV 2003, and it Corrupted it right off the bat, I had some of the Most Vicious virals on this computer, why? because One, just One, corrupted Norton, and opened the gate...now with 2000, I wouldve been able to at least save some information, burn a disc, but with XP, I had nothing, no sound, no Explorer, I went into safe mode and the virals Locked it in said mode, but never started explorer, so I had a black screen with "Safe Mode" in each corner that wouldnt work, even after rebooting, the Only thing that still worked was the internet connection, they had effectively made this computer a simple Bastion to the inner workings of whatever purpose the virals served, with full Cable internet access, sick huh?
