After the UK get their ID cards, Ireland will be the last EU country without them AFAIK. Correct me if im wrong.

Dude...what's wrong with a National ID?

Well, look at it like this. Why do we need a national ID? Because passports and driving licences are ineffective and easily forged. So how do you get the new ID? By handing in a passport or driving licence... oops.
