Mouse Issue

Like some others on here, haven't played UT2K4 in some time but recently, Ihad some medical leave and time was weighing heavy on my hands, so I decided to get back into it. I just reinstalled it from the retail DVD version and it's working slick. (I have a Dell Inspiron power gaming rig 2 yrs old-drivers current).

Went out and dl'd the Mega Pack and it installed fine. Added some additional maps and fired it up. Mouse working great.

Rebooted computer to let new settings take hold, and started up UT2K4 from the desktop shourtcut.

Went into Settings screen from the main menu, set my resolution, tweaked my controls (forward-up arrow, straife, etc), set up the crosshairs for the weapons, set the HUD display...all going well.

Back to Main Menu to set up a match.

Fire up (offline) Instant Action, selected my map, my rules, all the tabs. Configured my Advanced options, and launched the battle...

First thing I noticed is while the match is loading, you get the UT2K4 splashscreen with the "Loading...(map name) and a game hint across the left and bottom of screen. Well the text was all there and readable but the screen background was black! Like no splashscreen was loaded. That was the first glitch...

When the match loaded a few seconds later (normal load time), I got the "Press fire to begin..." but my mouse was frozen. Period. Not able to turn in place, fly around...frozen.

I had my mousewheel set to change weapons and I could change them at will...but even stuck in place (out in an open arena with nothing to block me) my "Fire" and "Alt-fire" buttons did nothing....my keyboard "Move" keys wouldn't work. I just stood ther and got fragged by a bot. Upon respawning I was stuck again.

Had to Ctl-Alt-Del to the Task Mgr to get me out of UT.

Somehow between the match setup screen and the actual match screen, the program is "forgetting" I have a mouse. Any ideas why or how to fix?

Which OS are you using? Also, it sounds like an .ini problem. GreatEmerald has more experience in these matters than I do though so I'll let him try first.

OK....rebooted, reapplied patch. Pach loaded without a hitch. Rebooted again, launched UT2K4. Set up an off-line (I don't ever play on-line) bot DM using stock 2K4 map and mutators. Launched DM and it began to load...with the black screen again. Match came up ready to play, but my character was frozen,...unable to move, unable to fire. All the mouse would allow me to do was switch between weapons.

Ctl-Alt-Del needed to get out of game back to desktop.

I'm using Win XP w/ all updates. Somewhere between the match setup screen and the battlefield itself my mouse is getting lost...

You are the second person this week I've heard of the black background instead the the nice artwork they show while the game is loading. I don't know anything of the mouse issue. I'll try to search around and see if I find anything elsewhere that may help.

Still looking a little...

I hate to go back to basics like this but in your control settings, do the options still list that primary fire and alt fire are binded to left and right click on the mouse. Another thought would be to reinstall just the game and the megapatch. Then tell us if everything is working normal. Then start adding your extras 1 by one playing some between each new installation.

My other thoughts are what is your monitor det to? Is it set to use default monitor or plug and play? Make sure it is set to plug and play or whatever the actual monitor is. Just don't let is be set to default monitor.

Another thought is I think I saw in your log where you have a quad core. Have you heard of or install a quad core patch for gaming yet?

Is your operating system a 64bit version. I read where some folks had black screen issues after installing s ome 64bit patch they used.

Maybe this

I copied this from a friend who recently dealt with the black spash screen issue. Here is what he did:

I got the problem after (re)installing one of the bonus packs and the latest patch.
I installed the Chaos mod after that, and it caused no problems.

My fix was to use an old backup user.ini file I had stored in the game folder. I tried comparing the new ini file with the backup to see what and where the difference was, but they didn't list all of the text in the same order, and seemed quite different from each other as to their overall content as well. The game runs with this older ini file, so I don't care if I undid a change or two that the new patch was supposed to do in order to solve some problem or other.

It sounds like he just needs to go to Input and reconfigure his movement keys in order to get fire and alt fire back onto his mouse.

Perhaps if there is nothing too fancy in your newly patch rewritten user.ini file Herm, you could try sending it to him since yours works?
I suppose he will have to go over all of his settings from player name to movement keys and speech binds though, if he uses someone else's player.ini file.


Here is a copy of my user.ini which I renamed by just adding.txt at the end so it would attach here. If you do try to use it, just right click it, rename it by removing the .txt at the end and then rename your original one to userold.ini and then place this one in the same folder where your old one is. Let us know how it goes.

Judging from the log, I think UT2004 is having a problem with getting the necessary packages for your character. Are they perhaps corrupted, moved out of place, or simply gone?

I noticed what seems to be a custom package also. UT3VoiceReaper?

The current state of things...

Hi Gang,

Sorry for not getting back to you, been out of state at a training class and got back late last nite. Working the next two night shifts.

Before I left (a few posts back), I completely uninstalled UT2K4. I was going to (as someone suggested) go back to a "totally stock" configuration and then add in little by little. I should've deleted the User.ini before doing that (as was suggested) as it may have saved a lot of work.

Yes, I am running some custom add-ons with my setup, such as the Chaos Mod (LOVE the crossbows and other new weapon types), and Jailbreak. But, with the basic 2K4 not running after patching, I never got that far this time around.

I am also a fan of collecting new maps and map packs, but download directly from FileFront and well-known mirrors (even tho I know it's no absolute gurantee of quality or error-free files). I am careful to only take maps that have multiple good reviews.

I also use mutators such as Spider Steroids, Arkon Weapons, Parachute, sticky translocators,...all stuff I've used without issue for years.

I have (as someone noted) downloaded (Skin CIty) some custom skins that I have not used before. This time around (when I reinstall 2K4) I will not use the custom skins or voice packs.

I am hoping to get reinstalled Monday afternoon or evening when I have my next run of days off...

I want to sincerely thank all of you who are taking the time and effort to help me with this issue. 2K4 is (IMHO) still the best out there and it's not just because the game is solid fun,..it's because it's community includes folks like yourselves willing to help.

Thanks again. Keep your fingers crossed for Monday. I'll repost what's happening....

Reinstalled 2K4 tonight from the DVD. Without doing anything to it, so far, it's working fine.

Now I need to add my additional maps cuz I'm bored silly with the stock maps. (I like medium to large maps). Not really into the small, tight-qyarters stuff where ya barely have time to spawn and you're DOA again...
