there was this orang-utan at that zoo, and she liked to "paint", bunch of lines and dots with food-dies, mostly though, she just licked the paint off the brushes, but anyway...
so that show organised a vernisage, inviting some kick-ass art critics, and putting about twenty of the orang-utan's works on display, having invented some funny background story for the "artist", who fled out of rumania during its bloody regime, and now "coped" with his experiences via painting.

that's all the critics needed...
they said "aaah!", and "oooh!", and "what 1337 skillz!", and their inside-babble galore, but were a bit "disgruntled", when (after a little buffet) "the artist" was lead into the rooms...

LMAO!

I know.

eh, real art? best art? sculptures and paintings? You're confusing craft with art. Da Vinci was a craftsman, Tomoko Takahashi is an artist.

what i was saying...there is no such thing as "real" art, but if you consider only classical art to be true art, then you are drastically overgeneralising. Modern art is just as worthy of the title art as classical art, and in my opinion much better. Classical artists had phenomenal skill in manipulating paint or stone, far more than most modern artists, but modern art is much more interesting and makes you think, laugh etc. some classical art does too, i know, but not to the same extent.

Right behind you...
I was in the Modern Art wing of the Milwuakee Art Museum this summer and I usually loathe being in museums of any kind, especially art, but it was all the modern stuff that really made me take a second glance at everything... for example...

-Someone carved out a hole in the museum floor to look like a sewer grate but down below the floor was an aquarium... looked like a furnace vent from far away but anyone who got close enough was rewarded with this funny looking watery landscape 6 feet under the floor.
-A doll lying flat on the floor with a camera projecting the artist's face while he made these depressing comments... It looked liek a tiny man paralyzed fromthe neck down talking to people passing by. I didn't see *anyone* pass that thing and not gape at it in disbelief.
-A lifelike model of a janitor mopping the floor under a painting. Everyone walked right around it thinking it was a person until they noticed it was one of the works of art.

No one's saying modern art has to be as meaningful as some surreal landscape by Dali or a naked angel orgy by a long-dead Italian... each work of art has to be put in a context. Comparing recent works to old farty stuff you learn about in school is a terrible idea.

The only thing they have in common is they made things that were interesting to them back then just as they do now.

Thats the sort of thing i'm talking about. Meaningful, thought-provoking and innovative.

Dai2, if you knew anything about Christians, you'd know there is no such thing as an Old Testament Christian. Christians, by definition, are New Testament.

Why do MY opinions make me closed-minded? I could accuse you of the same thing by NOT considering my opinions. So, don't go flingin' around statements like that without thinking first.

just to clear something up, cause I'm leet and know stuff about art and you should all listen to me etc

modern art = modernistic art = art from the modernistic period = 1950's.

The stuff you see at Tate or where ever is contemporary art... there is a significant difference..

I'm not the one thats doing the flaming!

Bang Out: I don't give a flying fig if you have me on ignore. But its annoying when you start talkin trash in IRC while hiding from my responses. It is odd though, whenever I say something, you ask if I'm saying stuff. I wonder if I'm really on ignore, or if its just an excuse not to have to face me in a debate about politics and stuff.

Cat: I can tell that you're talking because other people appear to be talking to themselves. It's a dead giveaway yet I still have to ask to make sure.

Besides, I tried debating you about politics but I can't argue with someone who's dealing with a faulty set of facts. Thus, I just don't.

Please enlighten me as to where I've gone wrong. I want to be right, if I'm wrong, tell me where. Of course you seem to bail everytime I ask you something.

the major difference being the amount of cynisism. i wont go as far as saying that old "modern art" was good and contempory art is bad, because there are a good number of lazy dumbass movements *cough*suprematism*cough* in modern art, but the amount of pop-world esque cynisism and superficiality in contempory art is a tad...off putting.

wow. that was so restrained. my art history teacher would be proud o_O

your agressive mix of old style values, not the widest of open minds, and strong beleaf in the bible, can often put you in a possition where you seem to be quite obviously "wrong" but refuse to admit it. for whatever reason.

that tends to annoy people trying to argue with you. though im sure i have more than my fair share of annoying habits. please feal free to not bring them up :)

that's an entirely too general statement, considering the huge amount of different art and styles and the amount of experimentation that contemporary artists do now. It's true that there is a fair amount of "cynical" art around, but it's not without purpose.
