**wishes someone had done this for UT99**
i want a bolter dammit!!! :p

as for the copyright thingy, as far as im aware, alsong as you are not making money or showing the product in a bad light you can normally get away with it.
besides the UT99 40k model has been around for ages (plus millions of eldar skins) and theres been no problems with that.
i guess as long as you credit Gamesworkshop there shouldnt be a problem.........but dont quote me on it :)

as for the mod itself, it looks very cool, i might even have to stop being a stubborn git and get UT2003

Wrong. Games Workshop actively will usually shut down anyone who attempts to make games, using their material. Your dealing with someone else's intellectual property here. This is legal & copyrighted stuff and you can't just use it just like that.

Models & Skins aren't games, and they don't bother Games Workshop too much, but a pc title would, mainly because it appears that Kujo (who developed Fire Warrior) is the *only* company who retain the current rights to do games under a Games Workshop license.

Also there *were* planned War 40K mods for UT99. Guess what? Thay got shut down by Games Workshop.

This happens with some of the popular anime series as well, look at most DBZ mods out there. Once they get a decent community base behind it, they get shut down.

It's like making your own D&D mod for UT2003. Wizard's I think it is will *sue* you immediately if you don't stop.

I can also confirm that GW are absolute bitches where copyright infringement is concerned, and will flat out refuse anything to be made in the way of mods etc. for games like this. Their legal guys aren't at all nice, I've had dealings with them before (not pc game related, rather something else I and some friends wanted to do some years ago).

I'm not surprised, they have to as well. If anyone made a free downloadable mod for their game (very cool though), they would go bust ... because who would buy the models, paint them and so on ... when it is just a click away and for free? [Ahhh, the American dream lives on]

i think the reason skins and models are not a issue is becasue GW do not have copyrights on the images but rather the names, after all if they copyrighted what a bloodangel looked like ( as in colours and patterns) anyone that painted a model as a bloodangle would be in breach of the copyright. so i assume it would be possible to do a mod aslong as you changes the names of the chapters and weapons and maybe a few other things. but hey ive been wrong before.

i guess i should point out that im in the UK, which isnt as sue crazy :p

Actually, skins and custom player models are illegal, while games and mods aren't. Just as long as you follow the rules laid down here ,

http://www.games-workshop.com/can_cant_do.htm

Scroll down and you'll find the section for mods...

Also I've never seen any mods get told directly by GW to stop production...
I have however seen a few get scared of being sued or whatever and stopped.

And GW do have copyrights on the images and appearance of their products, I think it's called Intelectual Property..?...

Jeez! do they allow there fans to do anything????? they seem to be very strcit when it comes to their trade marks

Thats why I like the makers of the unreal series, they could care less about what they trade mark and stuff is used for, just as long as its free and not bothering them :p

lol well it seems i was wrong all over the place.
so would i be right in saying, yes you can make a 40K TC but you cant use any skins that look like their products?

No they don't like single custom models...Like that Eldar wraithguard or spacemarine model that have been released for Unreal or Quake or whatever...Because according to them Disclaimers can't be effectively attached to the plugin player models...or something like that.. Although they dont seem to stop any being released

No, GW will actively shut down mods, I've seen it happen many a times already. Look, mindcry before continuing with the project I advise you to strongly email GW about this otherwise you can run into rocky ground.

makers of the unreal series
Okay, you try making Unreal III/UT2005 as a mod for UT2003 or U2. Let's see how Epic will deal with that, they will *stop* you...

There's currently a quake mod of 40k thats been completed and up for over 3+ years... and a half life ork mod of 40k still happening (though switching to HL2)...

I didnt see anything in their very clear rules about their IP stating a mod could not be made. They specificly mention that a space marine/unreal mod TC is perfectly acceptable...

i belive the quake mod was even able to sell copies provided the distribution was electronic only (no printing/burning CDs)...

Well it obviously hasnt been found out about yet, but when it is, they will also be stopped dead.

I find it hard to beleive so that a mod which clearly has some talented people behind it, has done so little research into this.

It has to be said, you've already shot the nails into your coffin with those pics ;) It's very firmly stated that you can't combine GW trademarked stuff with anyone else's copyrighted material, and you've got pictures of space marines running around Antalus there. It's being nitpicky, I admit quite freely, but it's true nonetheless :)
