Yo Hyde, I would like permission to skin your Marygold model (if I could nab C. Mark from you too, that'd be awesome). I'm just getting into skinning and want to try my hand at it.
By the way, does it matter if you use UPaint from UT2003 or UT2004 to skin models for UT2004? As in, does it make any difference which version you use?

OK. :)

However, if it is the first time for making the skin, probably Marygold may be difficult.
The skin of Marygold cannot be made, if you use UPaint only.
Although "alpha channel" is used in order to enable it to make various hair styles, UPaint has no function which can draw it.

ChameleonMark is much suitable for Upaint.
I recommend ChameleonMark rather than Marygold for your first skin.

New ChameleonMark will be uploaded in SkinCity in 12/30.
Do you want his ".psk" file?

I'm using Photoshop for skining mainly.

Sweet, thanks man. I saw your new skins for mark in your other thread, they look freakin awesome.

Your right about that marygold skin, I definitely couldn't do it all in UPaint. That face is the hardest too. How did you make the curve from forhead to nose? I think I'll try your way (as in, uploading it into photoshop and skinning it there). Did you skin Marygold entirely in photoshop, or were only some parts done there?

C. Mark definitly looks like it'll be easier to do, can you please post up the .psk file for C. Mark?

Before I forget, in order to add anything outside the model (like a piece of cloth, stick or something similar), you would need to edit the model in Maya or a similar program, right?

Here are the ".psk"s. :)

Yes. I drew all parts of that skin by Photoshop.

You are right. If you want to add any shape to the model or if you want to remove any shape form the model, it is needed to be edited by the "3D CG modeler" and the ".psk" file and the ".ukx" file are needed to be remade.

And, ".upp" file for UPaint.

Original size of the skin is 1024 x 1024.
However, it is too large to attach.
The skin currently put in here is reduced to 512 x 512.

Hmm... How do I get this thing into Photoshop? I tried "export texture" and it turned into a UPT file. Is there a plug in or something that can help photoshop read this, or is there a way to convert it to a different image file?

Try "Export character to Unreal" instead of "Export texture".
Then, you can get a ".upl" file in "...\ut2004\system" and a ".utx" file in "...\ut2004\texture".

And, open this ".utx" file in UnrealEd.
Export the texture as ".dds" file.

Then you can read this ".dds" file in Photoshop, if you installed the "dds plug-in". ;)

"dds plug-in" for Photoshop is here.

I tried that dds thing, but it just turned into some other format. No problem though, as it imported into photoshop just fine. I'm this -- close to pimpin it, but I need just need to work a little bit more.

Oh, and is there a tutorial or some kind of help page for what to do after the final product is done? I made a test skin for it and tried to import it, but he didn't go in right. I got the UPL and the UTX in their proper folders though, so I'm clueless as to what's goin on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably, the contents of ".upl" file are insufficient.
Perhaps, you got a ".upl" file like this. (When a name is set to "Mark2test.upp")

[Public]
Player=(BodySkin=Mark2test.Mark2testBody,FaceSkin=Mark2test.Mark2testHead,
DefaultName="Mark2test",Portrait=Mark2test.Mark2testPortrait)

Then, at least, if you add the contents like the following in your ".upl" file, you will be able to use your custom skin in the game.

[Public]
Player=(BodySkin=Mark2test.Mark2testBody,FaceSkin=Mark2test.Mark2testHead,
DefaultName="Mark2test",Portrait=Mark2test.Mark2testPortrait
,Mesh=ChameleonMark2Anim.Mark2,species=xGame.SPECIES_Night,Menu="SP",BotUse=1)

Figured out how to open up the upl, and typed in what you gave me. Here's what I typed in:

[Public]
Player=(DefaultName="KinNiku",Race="Nightmare",BodySkin=KinNiku.Kin NikuBody,FaceSkin=KinNiku.Kin NikuHead,Portrait=KinNiku.KinNikuPortrait,Text="test",Mesh=ChameleonEdgeAnim.Edge,species=xGame.SPECIES_Night,Ragdoll=Male,Menu="SP",BotUse=1)

and it's still not showing up. Something else I'm missing in here? And to make the portait, I just draw up a picture and save it. Then I change the upl to be: Portrait=KinNiku.(whatever it's called)
, right? But then where do I put the picture?

???
It does not seem to be something wrong.

Are there
ChameleonEdgeAnim.ukx in ut2004\Animations
KinNiku.upl in ut2004\System
KinNiku.utx in ut2004\Textures
?

If you want to make a portrait, draw a picture in 256x512 in a format that can be import in UnrealEd. (".dds" format is recommended).

Then, open your ".utx" file in UnrealEd, and import it in your ".utx" file.

You copied the text 1:1 out of your upl? If that's true, there might be a syntax error in there and UT2k4 can't find the texture!

BodySkin=KinNiku.Kin NikuBody,FaceSkin=KinNiku.Kin NikuHead,Portrait=KinNiku.KinNikuPortrait

Ocassionally Notepad makes some errors, when you paste copied texts into it.
Just kill the spaces and it should work ;)

Doesn't seem to do a thing. I think I might need to start over with the skin, since nothing's workin. Luckily, I'll just need to look to this thread to make sure I don't blow it again. Sorry Hide, the skin's gonna have a later release date. Hopefully, I can still make it similar (I think the biggest problem was when I started the skin in Upaint on the UT2k3 disk).

That's really kinda strange, when nothing seems to work we just have to wait for your 2nd attempt :(

Well, good news and bad news time. First, the good news: Yeah, it was definitely somethin up in that upl, I at least got the dude workin in there. However, he looks a little cel-shaded. Therefore, the bad news is I'm gonna need to shade this guy up a little, make up a back-story for him, then paste his ugly mug up for a portrait. There's my update.

Well all in all that are good news, if jus' the shading-part remains, nearly all difficulties are history ;)

Do you have some beta-screenies, so we can see what awaits ;)

Before I keep goin, is editing an existing skin allowed? As in, loadin up one of the original unreal skins and editing it from there? Or does the whole thing need to be custom? If it's the second thing, then I'll need a good couple of months. Wanna make sure I follow the rules.

If you edit an original skin from UT2003/2004 it´s ok . Epic gave the permission to mod their content.If you are talking about editing customskins (like the Marygoldskins), you have to ask the author for permission first .
And make sure the author of the customskin is mentioned in your read-me.
