and off topic we go...

Do you think they have any innovation left in them for a UT4? They tightened up the gameplay for games we've been playing for years, swell. But it seems like instead of doing anything new, they just slapped together some cutscenes and raped the franchise to force in some silly story that didn't fit, and that was that. I don't think we need more Unreals of War.

hmm one could argue that most people who didn't like the game, didn't like it precisely because it had some innovations. It's why some UT players didn't like UT 2004 and why both didn't like UT3. (and if there were a 4th game, some UT3 players wouldn't like UT4)

You have a point, certainly. Although it seemed like UT3 was trying to go towards UT1 except with a lot less stuff. I'm afraid if they did do UT4, they would just be trying to further the juvenile story (that's what they're doing with GoW2, isn't it?).

I'd love to be proven, to see a new UT with a workable UI and something new to play, perhaps that conquest idea, but it seems less and less likely.

"People didn’t care about Reaper as a person, and a lot of the reason for that was that the length of time between cinematics was really long. It could go 4, 5 hours between them."

Ugh, sounds like they thought it could have been better by shoveling more cinematic fluff on it. I thought the whole idea was an abortion, and I like single-player games.

...he thinks MK vs DC is their last hope...

Ouch.

I have to admit, UT3 certainly was an underperformer, from a sales point of view. But UT has changed publishers in the past, so maybe this isn't the death knell people might imagine. Epic might want to go out on a better note than UT3, and redeem themselves somewhat with their base. They did it once, they could do it again.

I'd heard somewhere Epic was contractually obligated to produce another UT. Odds are Midway are dumping them and UT4 will not come into existence, Epic will continue to develop for consoles, and the arena shooter will be dead forever.

Epic doesn't need Midway to make another UT game. Also, Epic will continue supporting UT3, at the very least, until MSUC is done.

Midway signed for 3 Unreal titles. UC2, UT3, and another. The press release did say something about separating contracts, however. Bottom line is we don't know until we hear from either Epic or Midway.

Well Im pretty sure it was another Unreal title not another UT, maybe thats what the franchise needs. Im pretty certain what it doesnt need is another blunder, I mean the name can only take so much of a beating but maybe with the right publisher things could really kick off again.

Who that publisher might be, who knows, all I know is not being under contract to produce another Unreal game might give Epic the time they need to get it right, maybe we wont see Unreal again till after GoW3... Yeah who knows, atleast Epic will have enough $ behind them to back it themselves for awhile till they get a label other than their own on it
