Well I had the opportunity to use an the Explorer and it felt really smooth and precise. I did not get to use it long enough to experience the problems you guys are having but I have read a few reviews that have pointed out that depending on the surface of the mouse pad and the speed of the mouse movement the mouse may act erratic. I unfortunately had to return my mouse because Win98 would not detect it and I wasn't up to reformating or any of that BS.

Beaver, you didnt turn off the computer, then plug in the mouse, did you?

I've found that USB LIKES to have things plugged in while the computer is on. It doesnt find things very well that just appear there when it was booted up.

(My speakers did that).

Win98, as long as you have an ATX board, or at least one with decent USB support, will always find it if you plug it in while it's running. Unless of course, your USB connectors weren't working.

USB optical mice rule. 'Nuff said. /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

My normal kills for a CTF match usually run in the teens or lower. As bad as I was last night ( /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif) I had considerably more kills than that. So I stink but the Intellimouse Explorer rocks.

And my wrist doesn't hurt anymore, either. Weird.

That's good to hear! I'm planning on buying one soon. My mousewheel is sticking and it's time to get a new one.

Please could some more people try this:
Set your mouse sensitivity to max (for testing purposes only). Move the mouse as little as possible and watch the cursor. Mine jumps some pixels (only a few). Try opening two windows, and setting them one right beneath the other, with no space left between and tell me if that was possible with the sens set to max (something higher). PLEASE. I want to know if I've got a broken(?) IntelliMouse Explorer.

I tried several things actually, I tried to use it as a PS2 mouse as well, pretty much covered all possibilities. I figured there must have been something from a previous mouse driver or the mouse itself was just bad. When I took it back there weren't any left, they were all sold out so I got something else. My system is hosed right now anyway so I might reformat after all.

Loib, actually the USB port (for intellimouse) is polled 1500 times a second.

http://www.microsoft.com/products/hardware/mouse/explorer.htm
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica">quote:</font><HR>You'll be amazed how smooth and precise this mouse feels. We've replaced the rubber-ball mechanics with an optical sensor that scans your desktop 1,500 times per second for pinpoint accuracy.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Aint no PS2 port gonna do that.

Beaver, not sure if you're with me, or against me.

If the laser tags the table at 1500 times a second...

What good does it do if it doesnt report that information 1500 times a second to the USB port?

I'm 99% sure that the poll rate on the USB Intellimouse Explorer is 1500, not 125 as Loib was saying.

Sorry man I don't want to seem like I am quick to point things out or anything, but this is what I ripped from the Firingsquad site;

"Tell me about "IntelliEye"
The IntelliEye camera peers straight down onto the mousing surface, and clicks away, taking 1,500 pictures a second. These pictures are compared against each other to determine motion, and the result is passed on to the computer as usual.

Now, it's important to note that the sampling rate remains a USB constant at 125Hz. The 1,500 number is an internal sampling number to most accurately position the mouse between polling updates. In general, the faster the sampling, the more updates you receive to mouse movement, and the faster you can move the mouse while retaining accuracy. The mouse is a native USB device, but ships with a USB to PS/2 converter. "

The mouse does NOT work at the serial Port (even with the right adapters). I've tested it once.
And the 1500 is really only the internal rate. The USB-Port is always refreshed at 125Hz. Wow 1500 would be good.

Anyone willing to test what I've said in my last message (it will only take a few seconds). Please (again).

This is alittle confusing. I was under the impression that the Usb ported mouse was polled at a higher rate. The reason was because I use a trackman marble, orginally I had a ps/2 version I purchased a usb version and did see a difference. Both have the same DPI so there is no difference there. I took it for granted it was because of a higher refresh rate. I know the usb bus transfers data faster between 1.2-1.5MBps perhaps that is why I have seen a difference??I have posted a question to USB.Org asking why the usb busline is better if the refresh is lower and why it seems faster and more accurate, with the same brand mouse at the DPI.As soon as I get a reply I will post it here..

I had the Explorer mouse and I will tell you this, it does not do micro movements at all well. Try zooming in with the sniper rifle and trying to get a head shot. The ms Explorer mose is horrible at small movements. I went out and bought a logitech cordless and now I have no problems at all with fine micro movements.

Bathel, you had the sensitivity WAY too high.

The fine movements is actually what the explorer is made for. You have to play with the settings for about a week or so to get it just right.

Yah, the normal movies are set at 24fps.

The iMax Theaters (I think that's the name) run at something like 60fps.

Those are the ones that can actually make people motion sick.

Let's say you're cruising along at 120MPH. True, you can't focus on every flower or pebble on the road. But damn the scenery looks smooth. Just because you can't focus on it (the eye's limitation on framerate), doesn't mean faster (fps) doesn't look smoother.
