This may not be the best place to post this but there isn't really a "general unreal-powered game" section on these boards :p

I have for the last 5 years done what I can to support Unreal 2 by hosting one of the 2 remaining servers, and also the Master Server for the same game. What I'm wondering is if there are other games or even community-made mods for which there are few or no remaining servers which might benefit from having a server provided for that community?

Essentially the box I am hosting the XMP server on is vastly over-powered for the task (since my provider kindly upgraded me to a far higher spec when the old box died) being a Quad 2.4GHz Xeon machine, and I'm thinking the spare resource may be better put to use supporting other ailing gaming communities. I've used it to host webspace for some and also for other random sites like xmpcommunity.com but I'm still only pushing 1% CPU on 1 core most of the time!

So I'm open to any suggestions for a suitable game to host, as I really don't play much outside of XMP and occasional bouts of UT99 :)

There are some limitations: I want to host something that will be of benefit to a community, so no games for which there are still loads of servers. I'd also like it to be an Unreal Engine game or mod, mainly because this is what I have the most experience in hosting and would also like to be able to play the game/mod myself (if only to test that the server is working OK and provide support for users).

So, are there any forgotten mods which people would like to see revived?

Any communities who would benefit from having a public server to play on?

Your feedback is appreciated. I would add that the age of the game is unimportant, so anything right back to mods for the original Unreal is a fair suggestion.

How long is this offer good for? I will be (hopefully) kicking out a new release for my UT2k4 YARM mod in another couple of weeks and it would be good fun to have a server set up for it.

It's good for as long as it takes to find a worthwhile game or mod to host. I'm not going to get rid of this box because I have no plans to terminate the U2XMP server and the box is far under-stretched running just that.

I'd be interested to hear more about your mod, I'd be keen to help fellow developers and can provide ftp access as well as remote start/stop functionality and stuff via a web interface.

Hmm, in fact, are there any UTXMP servers left? Last time I checked, there were none.

I'm kind of ambivalent about UTXMP because on the one hand it's exactly the type of mod I'm thinking of (and you're right since Captain_Tea's server went down there are no more servers - I think I even mentioned this to you on XFire the other day) but I'm torn because of the significant part it played in U2XMP's premature death and to be honest, if people want to play XMP I'd rather they came to play U2XMP - which is still a superior game in almost every way. I'll certainly think about it though, especially as 2k4 has a linux server which would enable me to use a linux box to host it, of which I have access to several.

From other mods, I think ChaosUT2 doesn't have many servers now. And from other games, The Wheel of Time has only 7 servers, 4 Deathmatch and 3 Citadel, and you can still find players there.
