I still dunno what scientology really is. I always fall asleep whenever someone tries to explain it to me.
That clambake link has info about him. I think the basic idea is hubbard was saying he discovered the soul of a person, and similar to how laws of physics given what we see around us, there’s something that governs thought and this resides in its own universe. That might not be exactly correct, but hubbard was a science fiction writer, so being exact doesn’t seem like a prerequisite.
He says the soul, or whatever he calls it, lives forever and we have experienced bad things in these past lives. So you are supposed to do crap to clear away all this bad stuff from the past and that helps you in some way.
Anyway, the guy was doing terribly in college and dropped out and ended up writing science fiction. He made a comment about how there is far more money in religion than writing science fiction for a penny a word. He mixed religious ideas, and a bunch of crap together to come up with his ideas. I think he started out trying to make money off this stuff by claiming it had medical importance. However, the medical community didn’t want to have anything to do with it.
Then he writes a book about it and some people will believe pretty much anything, so the book sold and the beginnings of an organization formed. As time went by, hubbard added rules to enforce behavior and wrote more books, etc.
