I tried infiltration many MANY moons ago and was thinking about giving the old horse another run... but before I do...

How is the pub community. SERIOUSLY now... are there a lot of pub servers or am I going to install this and see like 5 servers in my list... or they are all clan servers who expect only serious people on them with no leeway for my n00bishness.
I've been browsing through the forums and the community here seems pretty cool. If I do download and install this are there any particular servers off the top of your head where a n00ber can go and learn the game from helpful peeps and not get yelled at like a child? (One of the biggest turn-offs to any mod/new ga,e I try out) I'm in the US East Coast area if that helps.

I'd really like to give this a go again so any response would be helpful (as well as any settings/gameplay tips)

If you want you can reply to me in an email or private message (both in my profile) as I don't wanna start an all too easy target for flamers/trolls with a thread like this.

Thanx in advance guys :)

depending on when you try you should find one or two public servers populated. as long as you don't behave like an ass you don't have to expect any trouble, the online community is pretty calm. expect your ass to be kicked though, these regular players are anything but human, in my last ten online hours i shot no more then two people (and injured a few of my own team.... guess im getting old rather fast)

Hey welcome back.

Ive noticed many people have improved dramatically in there ability to kill. Ive always had a pretty easy time wacking people but its gettting harder. Duke admitted this as well. I suggest for a noob to try out any of the SG servers, because you will play more since you wont be dead as much as in EAS. Unless you visit one of the euro EAS servers during the daytime EST. If you want a challenge once your better, visit the {GD} server, as this probobly has the most difficult EAS settings. SG servers used to be filled with noobs, but alot of them have gotten pretty decent in the past few months, many of them playing 10 hours a day :)

Either way welcome back, and remember even if you die over and over at first its a hard game to master and takes time and patience.

Well, there are 22 servers with 50% closed 50% opened

Our community is small, only in the top-hours of eu and us maybe one or two servers are populated.

Be aware that this game is hard to learn. There are lots of important details, just like in RL and as fist said - most of the players play this game since 1, 2 or even more years. The main gametypes are:
EAS - A mission oriented game, played in the INF league and on public
DTAS - A mission oriented game designed for online teamplay
TDM - well, TeamDeathMatch as you probably know it

For a start I'd suggest TDM because you don't have to care about the mission but since most of the more mature players like mission oriented games more you will find a higher percentage of morons there.

I'd suggest that you try some of the weapons offline and the grenades(!) a bit and choose _one_ primary weapon that you like. Maybe the SIG551 (no ACOG) is a good start since it is good on short range CQB and can also be used to snipe a bit. Then play a lot with this weapon. If you think u have mastered it you can try the mission gameplay - DTAS or EAS. Then you can try other weapons, different tactics, .......

INF provides many ways to kill ;) and you will probably experience 80% of them during your first 100h of online gameplay ; )

Hey welcome back!

I'm wont repeat what everyone said... it think it's all there.

As for clan servers, don't be fooled by the appelation... our community is so small that clan server look more like public servers than anything else. On these servers, new players are genererally very well tolerated and even some times guided by some wets. You won't have any problems unless you start shooting at your own team voluntarly or stuff like that. As he said, just don't be an ass ;)

You also shoud be aware that the rules of conduct may very much vary depending on what gametype you play. It'll be too long to explain so you'll have to figure it out for yourself i guess, just watch how people do.

Thanx for the replies guys :) I'm about halfway thru the download now even before I came back to check on this thread haha.

I expect a sharp learning curve but that's what attracts me to games like this... as you can tell by my siggy I'm mainly an XMP player above anything else and that's also not exactly a game you can "hop in and pwn on" haha. As far as "realistc weapons" mods go I've played a bit of CS, Day of Defeat, and RO which I enjoy (even though I'm not so good at yet) This does have bots right? Not so much to give me a "challenge" but something that will at least move a little while I try out the different gun recoils and whatnot. It's better than shooting at the wall... which I will do to learn my aiming and "gun control". I was just worried I was gonna DL this and be surrounded by elitist players who have no patience for nooberz but I can already see by the attitude in your replies that's not the case :)

And I always try to be on my best behavior and use my "inside voice" on servers :)

Thanx again. Hopefully you'll see me on a server soon...

I'll be the one running around aiming down the stock with the barrel pointing back over my shoulder :) hahaha.

Oh and look for:
yyfsig.gif

as thats the name I usually use for these types of games... it's my own personal identity crisis :)

It has, and they even are a bit more than just moving (but not really a challenge after a while). Also their movements look strange - jumping and running around like wild chickens.

And I always try to be on my best behavior and use my "inside voice" on servers :)
inside voice? explain.

First thing, read the manual. It will answer a lot of questions.

Here are some things that newbies ask all the time:

1) Hold down altfire to steady your scope.
2) To change teams online, first open the QuickAction (QA) menu (usually "v" button). Go to -> Vote -> Change Teams. You will notice that you didn't change teams, this is because it only comes into effect when you join the server. Therefore, now open the console and type "reconnect."
3) The objectives are located at the green (or brown) arrows on your compass. Just keep heading in that direction, or follow someone who looks like they know what they are doing.
4) If you spawn with only a pistol, make sure to check two things:
--a) Does the server allowed scoped weapons? If not, and you are using one then it was removed form your loadout.
--b) Press F1. Look at the names, if one of them is orange then this is the Specialist gametype. It is just like EAS, but only the spec can complete the objectives. If you are the spec, DO NOT reconnect. It will cause the whole game to reset. Players will not be happy...
5) There are some new weapons for INF made by the community. They are mutators. To use the mutator, Download it from the forums and unzip it into your Unrealtournament/System folder. Then go to the mutators menu in INF and select the new weapon.

Unfortunately, the new weapons are updated constantly which leads to several different versions with the same file name. If you try to connect to a server with a different version than the one that you have, you will get a mismatch error. To correct this check two things:
--a) Check to see if you have the latest version in your UT/System directory.
--b) Go to Unrealtournament/Cache folder. Open cach.ini in notepad and look for the filename of the mutator. Then find the corresponding file with the really long name and delete it.

I hope to see you online, and I hope you try to learn a few of these things. It can be a little annoying (althouth not entirely unexpected) when new players don't even read the manual.

Ahh yes... the ever popular cry of RTFM N00b!!!! LOL

I think we've all been guilty of that one! haha

Oh and whenever my sister takes my 4 year-old nephew somewhere she tells him to be on his best behavior and use his "inside voice" as he has a tendancy to use his "OUTSIDE VOICE" when he says stuff sometimes.... very... VERY.. loudly. :)

Try out the training grounds, there very nice. Some have falling targets, you can practice shooting the mounted .50s as they are in some maps, and you can test all the weapons at once. Just click the top toggle switch in the startup to training and it will take you there. Theres also a nice reaction range for CQB.

Also, be prepared for downloads when you join the servers as there's always new maps, items, and things changing. They'll autodownload to you when you join.

I highly reccomend you get accustomed with the flawless Sig 551.
If you find that you are unloading alot more bullets into them than they are into you, they're probably wearing armor and you aren't.
Armor is my first priority when i'm designing a loadout, IIIa armor protects you against nearby grenade blasts, and will severly lengthen your life against silenced weapons.

For most loadouts (CQB and Assault) you won't need a pistol, its just a waste of space that you'll rarely use.

If you're going to be playing against the bots frequently, try setting up an uneven match (you versus 10 bots, or something similar). To do this, go to 'edit character', and edit two teams. Name one team "0 bots" and the other team "10 bots" or whatever you choose.

Be sure to download some of the mutators in the Development forums, there are 2 new weapons out (XM8, M16A4), and a very important bug fix, the 50cal penetration fix.

I tried XMP for a bit.

Much, much too fast for my old man reflexes.

Generally speaking, this community is incredibly friendly and helpful. If someone does give you a hard time, that is the exception rather than the rule.

The SIG is a lovely weapon. The laser and burst mode are a little useless but it does have good sights for CQB and a scope option.

The P90 is a favourite of mine for CQB. You've probably tried it already and noticed the sight. Complete no brainer to use and it comes with a torch. The recoil is nice and even so you can just aim a bit low and burst onto target.

I am unconvinced as to the value of armour. Most people seem to use rifles and that is bulk you could spend on ammo instead.

Test is simple. Wear level IIIa armor. Have someone wield a shotgun, an MP5, all the pistols minus the 5-7. Now stand still with knife in hand. Allow said person to shoot you in the chest. You will then learn the value of level IIIa armor. You may also try wearing Kevlar helmet, and allowing someone to shoot you in the head with a pistol, minus the 5-7. Note that the kev helmet will only absorb one round before becomming useless.

I know no one is gonna shoot you squarely in the chest at close range, but you will be amazed at how many times it will absorb enough damage to save you... FYI the level IIIa also has a weaker plate to cover your back. BUt no side protection except standard Kevlar. That only helps really against shrapnel and lowers damage slightly to normal round. The armor plate is where the magic is.

I dunno if it's the spread or what but my perception was that the IIIA vest offered very little benefit vs. shotguns.

I always seem to catch enough shot outside of the vest to die.

As I said, it seems like a majority of players online use rifle caliber weapons which even the IIIA vest offers precious little benefit against.

Re: Shrapnel, do you mean Yurch's shrapnel or the "blast" damage regular grenades do?

Just so it's clear, armour is NOT a guarantee. In fact, in my experience, it only really saves your life MAYBE 1 time out of 10 (and that's if you're lucky and usually at longer distances). Useful, but not the be-all-end-all. Positioning is far more important and a far better guarantee against dying - why take a bullet when you can not get shot at all, right? ;)

Oh, and while the SIG is a very effective weapon, it is hardly flawless. :p

Speaking as a newbie, I have come to prefer the M16A2 over the SIG-551. The slightly bigger damage does a bit of difference, and most of the time I use the weapon in semiauto anyway. I have a feeling that I land more shots on target with the M16A2, but that might just be my imagination. For CQB, the muzzle blast makes it impossible to correct your firing on full auto, so the three-round burst again comes out on top.

I use the Beretta exclusively for sidearm, but only equip one if I take a scope on the rifle. PSG-1 and RC-50 are out of question for me, to difficult to use.

Lastly, grenades. I like to have at least 6 grenades at all times, and they work wonders when I remember them.
