ISDN?

What I use. Its ok...much better than 56k...but the Cable Guys run circles around me...hehe.
Ive learned that ping by itself is not the sole determining factor in good play nor is packet loss the only thing that screws up gameplay..although it can be so bad that the server is not playable.
Anybody care to guess what causes me to shoot a rl or alt flak and hit a person directly(in my view) only to have them get bounced in the air...and then when asked they said the shot wasnt that close. Heres another one...you chase a player down a hallway and empty the mini into him and you can see that the majority of the shots are not making it...other servers just a brief burst of the mini and they are dead everytime. This comparison is made with pings being equal..around 150-190.
These two phenomenas plague me...and I have dual ISDN. Perhaps they affect everybody and there is no clear answer or solution.
This happens on about 20% of the servers Ive played on....including the OF servers /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif
Dont get me wrong, I wouldnt go back to 56k and will have DSL real, real soon /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

I had ISDN, now I have cable. ISDN was actually better for gaming than my cable. Dont get me wrong, cable is 10-15 times faster than ISDN for downloading but I had a smoother gaming connection with ISDN. They both beat the crap out of analog.

ISDN does not suck. I have ISDN and my game play is DRAMATICALLY better than a 56k modem.
Also when comparing my ISDN to my friends Cable Modem I have no packet loss where my friend (AT@T) has packet loss 4% - 10% almost all the time. Also my pings are consistently lower than his. I get pings of 80-90 on a good day. Just make VERY sure you have a good ISP. Bad ISP + ISDN = bad game play.
You wont be disappointed in the game play with 128k ISDN. So far the only thing that I can see Cable modems being better is in download speeds. I can't compete (15k vs 200+k). Also, make sure to get an internal ISDN modem. You will lose 30k with an external ISDN modem, because you are connecting thru your serial port.

Actually it all depends on how far you are from the relay stations. There is a lot of variability but in general, DSL is faster than ISDN. Interestingly, I have an ISDN router to a T1 line. Great pings (70-130) and instantanious web surfing.

I've got 128K ISDN (but will have ADSL in a few weeks -- finally!!! I'm only blocks away from the fiber optic switch woohoo!)

I've been pleased with it. My pings range from 120's to 200's depending on the server. It is MUCH better than my 56K modem was. As for packet loss, I dare say there is not a game where I don't have it. In fact, that would make a good thread.

As ADSL isnt gonna come to my area for at least 6 months (probably more likely to be a year or so /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif), I wanna know what everyones opinion of ISDN is? Does it give you good pings? I think BT's flat rate internet also covers ISDN as well. Dual ISDN would suit me fine, though normal ISDN would be a great improvemnet in itself /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I shall achieve my ambition in life, the ambition of all HPB's, to become an LPB!

IDSN is more expensive - but pings should be just as good (since it's fully digital).

I would definitely do it for 6 months just to get away from analog.

Go for it! (there may be a sizeable upfront cost associated with the modem).

ISDN is the only thing available here and I only use the 64kps connection (single) and you saw my pings...yah...it's worth it until something better comes along. Don't forget to buy the card. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Be careful when ordering ISDN before moving to ADSL. I have heard of people trying to get ADSL, but were told they couldn't since there were too many ISDN users on their circut. Not sure why this would be but you might want to investigate.
