Is it safe to leave a PS2 on all night?

I got a new game and I suck too much at it to unlock everything by earning it, but lucky for me everything can be time-release unlocked. Something like 138 hours total for everything.

How long is a "safe" amount of time?

I have had it on for at least 16 hours at a time before (when I first got it I had to play all the games I got, and played it all day).

Yes.

My logic goes as following: Either Sony's engineers are worth their paychecks, or alternatively, your ps2 burns and I enjoy your suffering.

Alright, so I'm being an *******, but iirc, people ask this question many times ("Is it safe to leave my Xbox/GC/PS2 on...") in many console forums. I figure it's safer to search there.

If you've got teh monies. The Plastation 2 consumes 93 watts of power. 138 hours x 93 W = 12834W. Which probably isn't a huge dent in your electric bill.

I'm sure it's fine. :)

I don't think there's a limit. The one at the store I work at never gets shut off so it's on 24/7. Imagine that: break into the store and you're free to play video games while you wait for your buddies to steal everything. :p

BTW, it will eventually lock up after 2 weeks.

What, like permanently or something?

We got one guy saying it'll lock up and another saying that there's one on 24/7 and nothing's wrong with it. lol. Can't be both! :p

Yes, it's on permanently (exception: christmas) in a box under a tv. It'll keep on going without damaging itself or overheating, but it may lock up after 2 weeks or so (sometimes longer). When it locks up I normally don't feel like resetting it so it stays turned on but locked up until somebody complains enough. Just remember to save every day. :p

Up my ass
Don't worry, I had a AI drive play the 24 hour le mans race for me in Gran Turismo 4 and everything was fine. If you want to be extra safe leave the PS2 up on its side not flat down, that gets the air flow going a little bit better. The PS2 can hold up pretty well to running for real long periods of time.

This is like the same thing as asking "is it safe to leave a lightbulb on all night?"...

There is pretty much nothing mechanical in a PS2 besides a fan, and I'm sure Sony uses reliable fans.

edit - btw, what game are you talking about?

Even if it isn't mechanical, it is a computer (basically) and computers love to overheat, have memory leaks, etc. So just because there aren't moving parts, doesn't mean it can't break down.

when I didn't have a memory card for my PS2 back when, I left the sucker on all the time, a few days at a time or so. It's fine, nothing back ever happened to mine (this is a PS2 that has been dragged, dropped, beaten and whatever else too)

Well ... at least it's not a Xbox. I heard those things can start fires if they're left running for too long. ;)

I'm sure it's pretty safe to leave it running. Just make sure it can't overheat and you don't leave it running when there's no one that could shut it down just in case things do go wrong.
'cause after all it is no server so it is not exactly designed to run 24/7 unsupervised.

OMFG IT MELTED I HAET YUO GUYZZZZZ

actually it didn't, and I don't. I's just sayin. :p

At least I have other things I can do while this is on. I recently, uh... acquired....a copy of Apocalypse Weekend (addon for Postal 2, which I also acquired) and so I'll blow through that soon. Without meaning to hijack my own thread, Postal 2 is not a terrible game, but it's one I wouldn't pay for.
