I'm back. BUT I HATE COMPUTERS

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Hail fellow PuF'ers,

I realized I missed my one year PuF birthday (Feb. 2nd) because I was too busy sucked into evil EverCrack. 56 levels later, the game has gotten on my nerves. I've decided to dust off that PantherXL and come back to UT for a while. I see a lot of new names, but I'm sure some of you old-schoolers are still around as well. Either way, hello, hi, wassssup, me lubs yew all. ^^

Now, let's see (I really hope I don't jinx myself but..).

I'VE FINALLY FIXED MY PING PROBLEMS! It was quite stupid, actually. I set my netspeed to about 4500 and my pings stabilized quite a bit. It doesn't affect my framerate much, I still average 60-70fps in most games. When I had it set to the usual 9000+ for DSL type lines, I'd spike into the 1500's quite frequently. With a lower netspeed I can keep a steady sub-100 ping on most East servers.

Here's the problem, though.

When I'm in the middle of a game, I lock up frequently. Like, just TOTALLY stops working. It doesn't do this in EQ, only UT. I whack the reset button, curse under my breath, and try to play again. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Here's my current setup:

1ghz AMD T-Bird
Abit KT7 motherboard
256mb ram
32mb Geforce2 GTS

I'm running DirectX 7.0a, latest Detonator3 drivers from the NVIDIA site, and installed the 4-in-1 thing for the motherboard (some VIA chipset update junk).

I built it myself so I'm fairly familiar with the hardware and screwing around with the BIOS and all that good stuff. Anybody have suggestions?

Oh duh, forgot that stuff.

Running 432, I couldn't even get 436 to run. Wouldn't detect my mouse and stuff.

I defrag frequently, never have anything I don't need running in the background (explorer, mouse thingie, dsl connection), using D3D (suppose I could experiment with OpenGL but I got weird flickers before when I tried) aaaaaaaaaand I'm using whatever .dll is there when you patch to 432.

Hey jenny?, welcome back.

This is from info games

"The game plays fine for a while, then locks up or crashes unexpectedly."
If you are playing in full-screen and do not have a 3DFX accelerator, try turning off the UseDirectSound option in the Advanced Options/Audio menu. (To access the Advanced Options, hit the ~ (tilde) key to bring down the console, and type "preferences".) You can also prevent this problem by playing the game in a window.

If you have overclocked your 3D card, it may be overheating. Even if you have not overclocked your card, you may want to try reducing your cards clock rate to reduce overheating. Check with your card manufacturer to determine if your 3D card supports this.

Turn off "Detail Textures", "Show Decals" and "Dynamic Lighting". Some users have reported that this eliminates or reduces the frequency of the lockups.

Gee, nice set. lol

Welcome back jenny.:)
Welcome to the ut lock up club too:(
Stuff that's worked for other people...disable agp 4x, disable fast write in your bios, disable RAID drivers, or any SCSI drivers. Any one of the above or a combo. read the threads linked to above as well. Worst come to worst go in software mode...looks a bit..emmm ugly but runs atleast.

/me does his patented FunkyBagpuss© happy dance.

About bloody time too :D

You have your UT cache set to 192?!?!?!
Ummm....try a 1/4 of your total ram size. Why give it more memory in cache than the actual game itself and your OS?!?!?!?
What detonators you using on the GeForce?
What motherboard you using?(some earlier Via ones required you to drop the AGP speed back to 2x for stability issues with the geforce).
I used to get lockups when I ran in D3D - thats why I use OpenGl. The S3TC textures look sweet BUT (and its a big but) if the server your playing on hasn't got them installed you'll suffer from the freakyskateypeople syndrome.
The obvious answer is to use the OpenGl driver but don't copy the S3TC textures over from the second CD.
The flickering will be caused by disabling vsync AND NOT setting RefreshRate=xx in your ini. file (under the opengl section), where "xx" is the frequency your monitor is running (it sometimes help to experiment with this by +/-5).
Last but not least what are the setting in your Nvidia cards display properties (i.e whats ticked and whats not)?

http://www.geforcefaq.com is kind of handy, as is http://www.gamebasement.com for their UT S3TC textures articles.

Anyway

You know, I keep seeing the myth about the UT Cache size repeated over and over.

However ... From Tim Sweeney himself:

CacheSizeMegs does not cache textures, music, models, sounds, code or anything like that. Setting it to a higher value could perhaps even cause problems (if UT reserves this much memory on startup, then you could be wasting a lot of memory that has been reserved for caching only a small amount of data). Keep this value low.

8MB is the recommended maximum size you should set it. Although if you have 128MB RAM + you may want to try larger values (increases performance in some cases). Do not bother using formula's for deciding this value, 4 - 8MB is all that most users need.

And yeah, that zi r0xx0r5!:D

Urs wasn't too bad either, SC. ;)

Well, I used to freeze alot of times, but I take it my OC on the vidcard made my comp freeze. I removed it and now it works good. Haven't frozen yet.

But still, my comp behaves like #%"¤! every now and then, but that's another story.;)

Hmmm ok, I fixed cache and a few other things, let's see how the lockups are now. ^_^
