I need to start shopping for LCD's, and I'm skeeeeered.

One of my beloved 19" CRT's is finally dieing after 10 yrs. Both of these monitors are horribly outdated, but they've been trusty old horses for awhile now. AS such, I now need to start searching for an LCD screen (or 2) to purchase (probably my xmas present lol).

Simple as this may seem, I am extremely nervous about buying an LCD sight unseen, as I've had issues with headaches from some flat screens in the past. My friend has a decent letterbox flatscreen he got from dell with an older pc, and games on it regularly. I actually tried UT3 for the first time on this computer back in the day before I decided to upgrade for it, and could not tolerate more than a few minutes with this machine. Does anyone know what might cause this? Is there something I can look at in the specs to avoid buying a monitor that's going to terrorize me?

With that said.

Just Google : Best dam LCD monitor that does not give you eye strain when you play video games.

You could see if a 120hz panel is better for you, then use it for 2D gaming at 120, rather then 3D. I wouldn't know it it's going to help eye strain or not however, maybe try and find one in a local store?

Or it could be to the fluorescent backlighting most use, and an LED monitor might help.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm actually heading back to the site of the original testdrive to see if I can repeat the headache. We'll take up from there...

I have a BenQ 24" LCD widescreen and it's great for gaming! You probably saw me discussing this a couple years ago. I believe they also make a 22" version, but not sure exactly what you're looking for.

Is it possible that gaming adds to eyestrain? I went back to my buddys place and played about 10 min of COD only to come away feeling it. I still think its partially not being used to the detail in that game, and the extra peripheral stuff you see also. On the flipside, I sit at work and stare at 2 flat screens for 8hrs a day with no adverse effects....

nowadays, LCD screens are great.
I'd STRONGLY advise going for a 24" screen with a 16:10 ratio. gives you a resolution of 1920*1200.
16:9 is overrated.

Damn, that's looks like a nice monitor at a nice price.

Great response time, great contrast (though those are usually overblown numbers).

200 bucks and a 5 egg average review? I'd go for it.
Only thing that could go wrong is you get a dud, oh, and the speakers probably sound like crap.

It almost feels like there should be some catch...

(I might grab one myself)

edit
Another thing, I've not bought an ASUS monitor but most manufacturers supply really bad cables, like worse than the worst stuff you can find separately.

The only thing wrong with it is it's not 120Hz (at least as far as I can tell from the details)........of course that would be a lot more dough.:) Kinda lame you can't adjust the monitor height though. Did you order anything yet?

ah, there's the catch :)

Still it's better than my current monitor (judging from a distance), which is still very nice quality.

I'd have to upgrade my video card though, as I'm used to lower native screen resolution. So 200 bucks quickly turns into 400-500.
