theft is theft. Sentencing will be fair. It's not like they broke into the FBI network or anything, although those arrested could be guilty of alot of other things aside from stealing the HL2 code. I'm sure if any of you had their credit card information stolen from these hackers you'd have a different opinion on the subject. That's all...

My answer is: I don't know. That depends under what head of power they are charged. Needless to say if you commit a crime you should be charged, indicted, tried and convicted (in that specific order).
If they have committed offences under any act or breached any statute that is where the indictments will arise.
Criminal law and the criminal responsibilities re: sentencing is extremely convoluted and complex. At least it is IMC (in my country). There is very little natural justice in criminal law as it is facts-based legal procedure. (O.k. all law is facts based but crimlaw is really up at the top of the list).
I am interested to see how this pans out with international law and treaty law re: cybercrime which is a whole emerging area thanks to our new and wonderful steam-powered (sorry I just had to get one in for BU forums)internet/world-wide web....

If I was buy or shorting Valve stock based on my expected responce from the majority of game buyers one month after HL2 released, I would be shorting the stock. I think there will be a lot of not so favorable content in the gaming press reviews. Notibly the lipsincing and facial animations. The interaction between Freeman and his coworkers was painfully bad to watch. And what the hech was with her movement stutering and sliding? Even if the game has a lot going for it I'm not willing to cring through bad cut scenes. The kids may already be sold but a lot of the purchasing demographic reads reviews and plenty of them before buying $50 games. In the past game reviewers often just stalled before releasing bad reviews of highly antisipated games. But that was in the day when good PC games were far and few between. That is not the case today.
I would be further be willing to bet that whatever strengths the Half-Life 2 Engine has will not be exorcised to great effect by Valve, and that will only be done buy their paying customers like the developers of Vampire the Masqurade and the modding community.

1. No names, no areas, nothing? For all I know this could be a complete lie. Also, didn't they link the phatbot suspect to the code theft, i.e. people outside of the US? If the FBI operates outside the US and other governments get to know it, that could be a diplomatic desaster.
2. Some recent act upped the punishment for computer related crime to 15 years. The charges will be copyright infringement and computer abuse, maybe obscuring the origin of the connection (that's two years in addition to everything else), as well. All in all a rapist will get less jailtime than them.

Caveat Emptor
In their defense you could say that it wouldn't be the first time in the computer gaming industry that product has suffered delays beyond its release date. In fact I can think of one other title straight up that a lot of people are hanging out for.
As for HL2 I won't be going there........... caveat emptor.

All the hacker pointed out that the hl2 e3 movie was fake and that the game was far from finished although valve said it would definally make the release date of 30 sept. 2003. What valve described as: "this is not scripted, the ai does this" was actually scripted. Lies, lies, lies, that's all valve does.
I actually bought a new computer at that time so i could play hl2. I don't regret buying it because it's damn nice for ut2k4 as well but i have not much hope for hl2. It will have to be a REALLY good game to gain any respect from me.

And even if it wasnt ive been saying they wouldnt release till winter 04 the whole time anyway.... and they may not even make that.
I could care less about HL2, it looks like **** so far, not even a slight resemblance to HL... which was deep in the black mesa facility, non of this faggy CS looking urban enviroment with booby traps and swat team guys.... It may turn out to be cool, but i doubt it will be a cool sequel.
I just hope they dont fag up TF2.... Thats about all im looking forward to from them, and there isnt any info yet.... The TFC players are teh ONLY people playing stuff that VALVE made anyway, the rest is all mods... Even TFC was bought from a Quake mod team..... But at least they made that, unlike every thing else they are making money of off....

LOL!. Are you retarded? Half-Life2 has no cutscenes and it's facial animations and lip synching are by far the best for any game to date or coming out in the next 6 months. Anyway i do not give a **** what you all think im looking forward to half life 2 and i think it has been thought through better cos they actullly have a good story line other that some games! I am currently liking how the game is looking so far, just i wish they could hurry up to see what the game is like! THEN we can make decisions and get all ****ed up at gow much we THINK it will suck and how we THINK they are lieing when actully we have no idea at all!
