I'm guessing the real reason why it is a holiday is so that the nation (USA) could have a holiday of it's own. That sort of thing builds patriotism. Remember, we're talking about the 1800s when this was made a holiday, before fun stuff like Veterans day and before people were quite so jaded *points up at previous posts* Happy National Holiday, People!!!
