Close. No country or nation is worth celebrating.

But you know... getting together with your friends, having some nice food and drinks, sharing stories? I'm in.

Sounds about right. That's what I did today. I rarely get to see most of my family, and I saw them today. It was nice while it lasted.

well sure, but that already happens like, every weekend.

I'm just not a fan of patriotism or nationalism or what have you.
that doesn't mean I can't have fun shooting fireworks or rooting for the USA at the Olympics or something. what it means is that I don't necessarily have some emotional attachment to the land where I just happened to be born.
it doesn't mean that I hate the US either.

being born just happens. it's not an achievement. you didn't choose the color of your skin or where you would be naturalized. there's not really any reason to take pride in one's place of birth or even one's race. doing so only leads to war :p

now if you'll excuse me, I've gotta shoot some bottle rockets at my neighbor.

I never can fathom why some folks make it a public announcement that they deny their patriotism. While I would never impose upon you that you HAVE to be patriotic, your comments are hardly your own. I have met numerous people who simply do not feel as though they should be patriotic. What I don't get is the sentiment that watching fireworks, saluting a flag or reciting pledge makes you patriotic. In my opinion, those activities alone do not make not you a patriot.

The fact that you challenge the leaders of this country, be they conservative or liberal, Democratic or Republican, federal, state or local levels, are also forms of expressing your patriotism. Voting in elections is your patriotic duty, as well as a Constitutional right.

Showing an emotional attachment to the land and nation has a definitive purpose, but patriotism goers much deeper. Even if you disagree with any war after the American Revolution, celebrating the US' birthday is a way to show thanks to those who fought for our Country's independence, and for the freedoms and rights each of us Americans have now because of those sacrifices made so long ago.

Don't be so cynical of yourself and/or your country, for both are what you make of them. Have fun shooting rockets at your neighbor. That sounds like good old fashioned American fun.

It would be a perfect day to go out and burn a flag in celebration of your right to free speech. And a great way to irritate those who have no clue what true patriotism is all about.
