It's not a staple of major games now either, it just so happens that Gears is popular right now.

If you were to ask the same ignorant, unwashed Xbox masses, they'd probably tell you that Halo or CoD were the first FPSs.

It's not a staple of major games now either.

Examples of wave-based/objective-based co-op modes in games, past and present: Treyarch's Zombie mode in their iterations of the Call of Duty Series, Onslaught in Bad Company 2 (sort of a reverse mode), Modern Warfare 2's Specops Mode, RF: Armageddon's multiplayer co-operative wave-based mode, UT2004's Invasion mode, Halo: Reach's Firefight Mode... the list goes on. I'd hardly say your statement is accurate.

Edit: I almost forgot: Section 8: Prejudice's Swarm mode.

Yeah, the idea has been around forever, but hardly anyone but Epic was doing it in FPS games any more. After horde mode, just about every shooter that comes along has it. That is why I was giving them credit for revitalizing the concept, not creating it.

While the defense points could be a fun addition, I hope they make it optional. Sometimes you just want to jump in and shoot some baddies without extra delay or complexity.

Also, while the nature of Gears is to defend a position, defending the same spot round after round can get repetitive. I would like to see levels that have multiple good defensive positions with something to motivate you to switch occasionally. Maybe they could have ammo pickups and other bonus items that regenerate quickly if they have not been used for a while but regenerate more slowly if they keep getting taken. It is sort of like a cool-down mechanic. A pick-up spawn "overheats" and spawns less frequently if it gets used a lot, but if you leave it for a few minutes (or maybe a whole round), it will cool down. Another option is to simply have one or two defensive positions per round get bonuses (additional item spawns, turrets, blockades, etc). I think the "objectives" they mention could serve this purpose too.

I don't agree.

You just need to have experienced players, no communication is required, you just grab the mulchers on the ground and rape everything from one point in the map, always the same point.
lol, mulcher boomer @ level 35 on normal gibs you in about a second. Good luck trying beat him in the open.

Boss waves!

Sounds like it'll be pretty awesome for a good team, but it also means it'll fall apart just as fast, if not faster with your usually random public game fare. The random challenges should help mix things up at least a little.

You must have difficulties reading my post, I never said anything about walking around in the open.
