I'd like the characters to be deeper, to have some kind of background to them. They were cheesy, but all the squad members felt 2dimensional, even Fenix with his little 14 years in prison storyline. You don't even get to know why the trial was unfair.
We should probably dispatch a community mail to epic so they include the talk in GoW2.

4 years in prison.
He abandoned his post to try and save his father when the Locust breached Jacinto, but he was too late. Hoffman took it as a personal affront and was instrumental in making sure Marcus got as much of a sentence as he could. Only Dom's testimony prevented him from being executed...

iirc this wasn't mentioned in the game, was it?

Well it's mentioned somewhere in the manual, but storywise it would have been good to flesh it out ingame, too, especially in the beginning when Hoffman yells something about not being worthy enough for the armor at you. It would haven strengthened Fenix' relationship with Dom if they had word about it.
Yet, you do not know much about his trial or whether he desperatly wanted to save his father, nor why thinks the way about him as he claims somewhere at the beginning of Act 5. A good storydeveloper would have taken care of it all. Unfortunatly, there aren't too many Clive Barkers involved in gaming development (regardless of Jericho is half way failure as well).

Does GoW2 remind anyone of the recent RS:Vegas release? To me, it kinda looks, feels, and smells ;) the same as the last one, with a couple new features (chainsaw duels, new weapons, and large creatures) thrown in. They haven't announced any significant additions or changes (ala Halo2 dual-wielding, I know, don't crucify me).

The lack of colors aside from grey in those screenshots is really unappealing.

Heres the problem that EPIC faces. They want to create mood. The best tool for doing that is through the use of color. As an environment artist I've studied this subject in detail. An example is the color in the movie Saving Private Ryan. Everything was washed out to create a depressing mood. Suicides are highest in areas of the world where it rains a lot. So bright color or washed out color has a huge effect on us subconciously. While I think that the trees in the scene showed could be a brighter green but bright pretty colors subconcoiusly make us feel better. Who likes sunny days? Pretty sure most of us. So I think the more color EPIC adds the mood of the game EPIC is going for will start to get lost.

Was Halo depressing? The apocalyptic threat of the flood should have made it feel that way but it didn't. And thats because despite good story telling compelling gameplay, and cool enemies you would still run into a shiny glowing green, blue or whatever. That changed the mood to adventurous or something for me and ther was no gloom factor in that game. We all know EPIC can make bright pretty games but color is a careful line that has to not contradict the mood you have set out to create in your game.

I think that color should be used according to the story in this particular game. In this scene after engaging and defeating the enemy I think the color of the surrouding area (trees, the sky, and mountains) should be brightened as you ride out of the area on the derriks? I think they're called like your riding out of the gloom and fog of war. I don't think its a bad idea because its used this way in movies and games are rapidly approaching that medium in technology.

So having studied color for game design I thought I'd throw out the likely reason why there is a lack of color. It may not be the best looking solution but it serves the overall game better IMO. I'm not trying to sound "DEEP" or anything just mentioning the reasons. This was likely planned for mood in the game. Perfect example I just thought of. Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. Red is used to promote caution or danger. The sky is dark, overcast and full of ash. Same thing at the end of Star Wars episode 3 all the scenes of Anakin after he became Vader are dark. Mustafar is volcanic and gloomy, the scene where he is taken by the emperor to the medical station its raining and lightning while they're taking Vader off the ship and walking across the landing platform of the hospital. Hope this makes sense.

They tried to create a "serious" storyline for UT3, which is why they carried over the gloomy look. The previous UT's were a bit more silly, so they were brighter.

For the record, I've always thought Epic blew at making stories in pretty much every game they've made (never played the original Unreal, but from what I've seen, it was lacking as well. I know U2 sucked nads), so I wouldn't place any high hopes on the game having a compelling story. That being said, Epic rocks at gameplay and technology, so it'll probably excel in both of those.

Does anyone else find it ironic that two companies who are prominent members of the PCGA
one of which has been taking every opportunity to moan about the state of the pc gaming industry are hard at work on a console exclusive, that by the time it gets ported to the pc people will have little or no interest in.
