Financially planning out a new PC for UT2007?

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

It's a sad day in gaming when you have to work 4 jobs to afford hardware to play the latest game. It's getting kind of out of hand.

Get a decent job.

Solved \o/

nb - if i wasn't on a basic graduate wage, owning my own flat and looking after everything myself for me and my girl and soon-to-be kid, i'd be able to afford a new rig every month... Even still, if i want to loose my testicles i can buy whatever i want anyway. There are also credit cards, and if you're not stupid you can use them for their purpose, to get things now in order to pay off later.

"And if you're not stupid you can use them for their purpose, to get things now in order to pay off later."

There's only one use for credit cards. To have a permanent interest free loan for the average value of what you spend per month. (i.e. pay it off in full, each month by direct debit.)

Have a look at my currently planned UT2k7 comp.

UT2k7 Comp wishlist at Newegg - Price: $1,163.46 (RAM not included, but you'll probably lift that out of your comp)

Truegamer, I think I live near you (Newburyport, MA)

The best part of building your own comp in your situation is that A) everything is cheaper and B) you can buy the components you have money for at the moment, and then save up again, and buy more. (start with the things that won't be easily obsolete like your mobo, case, and hard drive, and end with the cutting-edge items like GPU and CPU)

I'm waiting until the UT2007 demo is released, so I'll probably buy most of my new computer between then and the release of the full game. Unless the X2s drop in price, I'll be going with a Pentium D though.

The prices on the GeForce 7800s should drop a bit as well by then. Then I'll be able to play the game decently \o/

Suck my boomstick!
Upgrading now?

Why, after the UT2007 release my rig will be worth less...

In other words, If you wait untill after the release, you will pay less for the same rig. Also, you will know the specs you need to play UT2007 so you can save money on that too!

I think UT2007 will be released in 3rd quarter of 2006, maybe even the 4rd. So that gives us some time to save more money...

I agree it is silly to start planning now. I'm sticking to the assumption that I will definitely need a complete overhaul, and am setting aside about £1000 for Q4 2006. I'll see what is available and the best performance/value at the time.

But think of it this way. UE3 is going to be running on the PS3, which is effectively 7 processors (major oversimplification), so UE3 will have to be optimised for multiple cores/processors. I just wish things had gone this way much sooner, then I'd still be running my dual P3/1GHz ;).
