awesome, much better now. I agree that a few rock outcroppings would be nice. And yes the Sahara has them. Depending on the objectives I think Trenches will work for the Defenders, though not alot of them, remember it takes back breaking work to make them. And most soliders will just do enough to get the job done :)

rocks and dune arent mixed in the sahara. you get rocks/ or you get dunes

and its impossible to dig a trench in a dune part of the sahara. some holes i think its possible..

not 100%sure though

whoah, now I see in a better example, I must say that the first pic did the geometry no justice!
This is great, sorry about the comment, but it did look quite terramarked in the first pic...

The new texture is great and really gives it all a dreary sandstorm look, especially combined with the skybox. (though the sun in the skybox is quite large)

I must say, very nice, especially for a first map.

In fact, the thumbnail of the latter screenshot looked like a reference pic in a first glance, 'till I noticed the gun.

The second screenshot looks very promising. What is the max polycount you get from a standard playing angle?

looking good there kw. good luck!

oh and maybe you can use freon's mapactor so you get blowing dust / sand going on in there! and then some nice blowing wind sounds..
would make it come alive even more!

some proof HERE, seems the Shahara is a mix of terrains so anything is possible. I have NOT been there and this information is from the interweb so.. but I think I trust PBS a bit more than most. And to dig trenches wouldnt be to difficult, if the walls are supported via wood planks or something similiar.

A small little firebase would be nice. Just an outpost or something maybe with a guard tower. Whats your idea for objectives? Are you gonna add airstrikes? Chopper support? Tank support? Anything is possible. ;)

How about escort a tank column to a firebase, then if you get them there they will destroy the firebases defenses allowing you to penetrate into a lower bunker, where you can place other objectives, perhaps take photos of top secret documents and top secret equipment too heavy to carry out, perhaps WMD.

The objectives will revolve around how well I can get the chopper mesh mover insertion/exraction working. So I can't really say until I get it working in the map. I am definately going to do something random. I was leaning toward pilot rescue, plane wreckage securing, and maybe some SAM batteries that could be destroyed to allow choppers to insert farther into the map.

The insertion won't be random, but there will be multiple insertion points that the attackers can choose from. The main objective location WILL be random, so although the attackers can choose any insertion, they won't know which is closest to the obj. This will also prevent the defenders from camping the landing zone. I might have some gunship support that comes with the insertion helicopter. It could provide protection in the form of a sniper actor (like Iraq), or I might be able to have player controllable M2's in the heli's.

Looking good keisha! How about taking out some terrorist training camp...er..wait..this is mil vs. mil. Hmm....
Taking out "a support base of rogue technical advisors with military background"
Some tents, radio masts, chopper and other material that has to be destroyed.

Anyway, looking forward to give this map a spin! Good luck.

a damaged / raided convoy could make a nice eas goal here. building (even tents) would kinda take away from the atmosphere and would be kinda unrealistic since any structures in deserst are usually near the few places where you can find water.

For what it's worth, I've got some pics I took during a brief camel trip into the sandy bit of the Sahara; I'll try and get some scanned.

It was on the outskirts of a desert town; there was quite a nice tree-lined horizon looking towards the town, and there was also an old-style fort in the middle of the desert (so it's possible ;) ). There were date palm trees and small bits of scrub scattered around, rapidly becoming sparser as you went further into the desert (until it was all just sand). Just in case you're interested...

Ok, a couple more questions:

1) Is it ok to combine two or more terrain brushes? If so, then how to I get rid of the wall that divides them. The wall isn't visible or solid during play, but it looks it could cause problems especially since there are two sets of vertices in the same place.

2) I got some invisible walls/slopes. What are these usually from, and how do you fix them. The walls/slopes are not visible in the game or the editor, but I can't move through them.

3) Why do my textures misalign after every rebuild?

4) Does anyone know where I could find (or would you like to make for me ;) ) A small SAM site, a crashed spy plane, an airplane ejector seat with parachute out and lying on the ground, and a small keycard.

1. Combining terrain bushes is just as okay as combining any other set of brushes. However, the more complex the brushes, the more BSP errors you'll run into.

2. Invisible walls are a form of BSP error. They're usually caused by complex and non-aligned geometry, terrain brushes are prone to produce some errors. Don't worry about it now [except if there are too many of them], these things are usually fixed last because every change to the map's geometry also changes the BSP, creating new errors and getting rid of old ones.

3. They shouldn't.

4. No, but if anyone wants to make that ejected airplane seat with a parachute - tell me, I need one as well.

1 & 2 : what reaper said

3) That's because you move the vertex of your terrain. You should make sure your terrain geometry is 100% done before applying the texture.

4) If I find some time I might do them, but:
- what do you mean by "small SAM site"
- what kind of plane (there is already a F16 in INF)
