I'd like to bitch about the $hit quality of DVDs on the market just now, specifically VHS quality on a supposed digital media.
I just bought a Friends DVD yesterday and the quality sucked big time. It hadn't been digitally remastered for production on DVD and had fewer FPS than a standard VHS tape. Any large movements made by any of the actors caused tracers accross the screen and the picture quality was worse than what I've viewed on Sky1.
And its not just Friends thats guilty, many of the DVDs that you can buy are just the same. If you went into a Music store and bought a CD and then played it at home just to hear audio tape quality on your CD player. you'd be pretty pi$$ed off right? .... so why are they getting away with the same sort of thing on the DVD format? I pay those extra pounds for a DVD because I'm expecting a superior quality product, but I feel like I'm being robbed blind!
It wouldn't be so bad if it actually said on the cover of the DVD that it was not digitally remastered but it NEVER does! (at least it doesn't here in the UK)
Not only that but we British are being robbed even further by being expected to fork out £25 (nearly $40) for each new DVD.....WTF!!!
How much do you guys pay in the States?

Ok......I'm finsihed ranting now....just wanted to get that off my chest /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I agree, alot of DVD's just look like slop.
"Hey this movie's on DVD!!" Small print: But it in no way takes advantage of that.

I pay anywhere from $15.00 to $30.00 depending on the popularity of the movie. But most cost $20.00.

So far, I'm very happy with the quality. I have yet to see a "sloppy" one.

I've only rented about 4 DVDs since I got my DVD drive with my new computer, and I've not seen any problems either.

I'm a bit behind the times on movies, so I have not seen "There's something about Mary" yet. I went home at lunch and decided to watch an hour of it! What a strange movie!! Funny as all get out, but strange!

/~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I normally steer away from certain movies due to excessive profanity, but this one is pretty funny, so far.

They make a bundle off of DVDs if it is anything like CDs. We get our CDs pressed for about $1.25 per CD, if not less, depending on how many we press. DVDs are pretty much the same, depending on whether or not they have two sides. I realize that you have to pay for the content as well as the physical costs, but still they charge way too much for these things!

IMHO.

DVD's require more expensive equipment to produce.
I dont think it fully justifies the cost, but at leas some of it is accounted for.

Agreed liz. I haven't actually seen any. I just bought Labyrinth on DVD, and it looks far better than my VHS copy.
This has, however, been a problem in cartoons for a while. They will release a "digitally remastered" version, and it will be FAR inferior to the original. Here's an example.
url]

The bottom pic is the "remastered" version. The top one was released several years ago, and was a straight film to VHS copy.

All they do is run it through a DVNR (Digital video noise reduction) machine. What that does is try to rempve scratches and spots from films. It does so by comparing frames and removing sudden contrast differences. Well, cartoons are by nature contrasty, and change drastically from frame to frame.

I expect the DVDs to be more expensive than video tapes and CDs after all they are a new technology and cost more to manufacture, but thats no excuse for the manufacturers that are charging us Brits nearly twice the amount than our American brethen.

I find that the dodgy DVDs tend to be the older movies that were made before this new technology was introduced. New releases that you find in the rental stores are always fine but older movies like Blade Runner, Dune and some of the Jackie Chan DVDs tend to suck.

Jeez, you're almost better off having them shipped from here...you'd need to hack the zoning thing, but that's sposed to be a no brainer.

I once read where it cost about $75,000.00 to transfer a movie to DVD (without the extra's.)

And this is why you'll never see some older (less popualr) movies tranfered to DVD.

Sahara... No /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif

If I ever want mugged, instead of hanging around the local Glasgow suburbs late at night, I could just pay a visit to HMV or Tower Records and buy a DVD /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

I only have a DVD player in my computer, not a stand alone unit. I like the extras over a VCR and the quality of picture on the computer monitor. Slow motion as Cameron Diaz undres... uh, I mean... the way you can see outtakes and video and such all on one disc.
