You're referring to framerate, not ping. Ping is netspeed- if your bullets are taking a while to hit the target while playing online, that's lag. If what you're seeing on-screen looks choppy, that's framerate. Sorry to be so anal, but it's a little annoying. 
Actually I'm surprised by how well Doom 3 runs, most reasonable-spec comps of the last year can run it pretty well. My FX5600 runs it almost flawlessly at High spec with all options except Anti-Aliasing, and ridiculously well if Bump Mapping is disabled.
Kind of a side-note here, I'm surprised Id didn't choose to make the maps slightly more open and add a co-op feature- co-op is probably the single most-requested PC gaming feature of current times, and whoever taps this first will be sitting on an absolute goldmine, assuming they don't screw it up.
