Do you think we can trust modders to make acceptable skaarj?

One of the first things we found out about 2k7 was the lack of skaarj. So the question is do you think we can trust modders to make acceptable skaarj?

Off course
What kind of question is that? Trust modders to make acceptable skaarj? :con:
Download some of the quality models of UT2003/4 and see for yourself. If I was a modeler, I would find that question insulting.

If I were you, I'd hold back on questions of level reviewers or guide makers :stick:

Couldn't have put it better.

Also, what is with all the smilies in your signature? :hmm:

If they want, they can make high quality Skaarjs, but maybe the question should be:

Are you going to buy the game without the Skaarj?

Maybe the answer should be:

Yes

and btw, I have seen some community modelers/skinners' models/skins, and some are absolutely amazing.

For every great model I've seen dozens of skins and models that could have been made by a five year old ... (and a colourblind one at that).

In UT2k7 I expect this gap between pro-quality amateur and total crap to be even more visible.
I think we'll have more crappy skaarj then we can handle (kind of like how there's tons of crappy remakes of 'classic' maps), which won't be a real problem as long as there's still people doing great professional-quality models for free ...

IMHO it's more a question of whether we can trust the community (ie : players) to try and force a standard level of quality for 3rd party content in general.

I see a whole new generation of models from the Unreal community with the new engine. I also see a bunch of new community modellers coming out of the woodworks, guys&gals who usually frequent places like CGchat and Polycount. Reason why? Well alot of people have left unreal to develop for higher end engines like HalfLife2, Doom3 and Cryengine becuase of the more realistic models and texturing that can be done. When UT2007 comes out I imagine you will see alot of those same people, and other professional modellers/artists to dabble in the new engine's rendering capabilities and ease of use.
I have no doubt we will see new Skaarj, as well as other new characters in much more realistic skins than we see now. Problem is, will you have the system to see these advanced models?
And like Jafo says we will see a bunch of "less-than-steller" skins, but people have to start somewhere and creating characters with UE3 is very different than what they will be used to.
There is alot of us who are already preparing for UT2007, creating new models and rendering out normal maps and other texture materials for the game. I guess I just have a more positive outlook on things.

Sure people will have to start somewhere, but sometimes you've really got to wonder what on earth they were smoking when they thought that it should be made public.

I think we really do need a specialised review-site along the lines of Nali-city to help separate the crap from good stuff. Perhaps something as simple as this thread in the UT2kx-forum ...

Erhm, obviously by releasing it to the public they will (in most cases) be receiving feedback, which will hopefully help them become better modelers/skinners.

As we are talking about these Picassos, anyone can tell me why they release skins without team colors?

A dedicated website to the "Ownage" of player skins would be so nice to see.
Theres just one too many fansites that just mingle everything together into one big bundle(good, bad and the ugly). I would gladly make a site for this and I know other disgruntled UT skin fans from other fansites who would do it too but the cost of bandwidth is just too steep.
It would be good to have an amatuer section and advanced professional section for model skins, so nobody feels left out. This way we can weed through the stuff we dont like and just get whats preferable. Yet still providing a place for the noobs to learn from the best , and know how they achieved thier techniques.
Maybe we will never see a place like this, but it doesnt hurt to think about it.
