You changed your mind, I see.

About outright hating it? Yes. But still I like simpler, more oldskool stuff, simpler inventory system, not so limiting like in Deus Ex etc.
But for a change it doesn't hurt and it's a good game despite some flaws and the things I don't like that much.

I can't seem to be able to trigger the what a shame convo. Or is that in non patched game only? She only says Oh my god daddy, but JC doesn't say what a shame. He doesn't say it no matter what.

I don't come to this forum very often, but i come from time to time. But to this thread i had to respond!

I played System Shock 2 some time ago and didn't like it all that much. Not because of rpg elements but because it was way too repetitive. I may give it another go some time in the future. I played DeusEx earlier this year, and i was a bit skeptical about it before i played it. I am also a big fan of fast paced shooters like Doom,Quake and Unreal. But as soon as i started playing it, i liked the game and it just kept on getting better. I just didn't like the last few levels of the game, and yes some dialogue is corny, and game isn't perfect, but it's pros overshadow the cons that they become invisible.

I guess Leo doesn't like it because it is a fps/rpg hybrid, but i liked the diversity within the game.

You should read all my posts. What I didn't like is the action and pace of the game, also I like the diversity and I applaud the game for that, I said that. Basically Unreal 2 was supposed to have that kind of diversity too, now if that survived it would be one of the best games ever made, together with variety of enemies etc and a good action.

But the inventory system and GUI in Deus Ex is really bad, but I got used to it after some time, that doesn't mean I still like it. Remember old RPGs didn't even have those convoluted systems, it was the modern RPG era which introduced that kind of stuff.

Also, the maps don't look that good and there are many aligning errors, as a level designer myself I don't like when that happens.

It shows a lazy work in that regard.

Here, look at the examples of bad aligment.

I hated Deus Ex when I first tried to play it, the first level and the office area of Unatco sucks balls. However after a couple of hours (especially when you got to hong kong) it starts to really kick in and has a great plot. Sure the voice acting is corny and the animations are wooden and the graphics can be really ****... but this isn't the only revered game with these problems, remember Resident Evil?

This is just part of the charm. Most people hate Daikatana so it's a bad comparison, despite the fact that Daikatana has better voice work, better animations and better graphics, it also falls flat on depth, doesn't evolve into a better game from the first few levels (and who wants to fight robot frogs and insects anyway??)...

Yes that's true, I hated it when I started to play it but got used to it and it got better indeed.

As for Daikatana I never found the robotic animals at the first levels that much of a problem. That guy who did the story claimed that something went wrong when it turned up to be robo mosquitos and ****, but I know for a fact that they were there from beginning, since the pre alpha times, it was planned along the plot, obviously the real animals died out so they are replaced by the robots, which can also be controlled or put out to attack intruders.

But the game does get better imo, the second and third episode is really good at times, and episode 1 has few good levels too, for example the solitary level I like although I prefer the 98 version of that since it had more locations and different ending, with some cool laser traps and showdowns going on. But there are really only few levels which are outright bad in there.

I agree with TossMonkey, i also begun liking game more and more after those first few levels.

I really don't see any problem with UI, as a matter of fact i find it really easy to use.
The only thing that i don't really like are the graphics, it is Unreal engine, with original Unreal still looking great. But DeusEx runs worse than Unreal and it has worse graphics. I suppose that all that space was used to make bigger in sence of diversity, there was maybe no room for visual improvement.

I am considering trying out Daikatana, is it worth playing?

It's probably more likely that Unreal Engine was designed for what Unreal needed to be good at, and modern cityscapes just weren't that.

But it's a passive game, very passive. The action is really subpar and I expect a good action from FPS.

Well tharr's yer problem!

Deus-EX is not an FPS game, it's an RPG that happens to be played from the first person perspective, an "FPSRPG" with emphasis on the "RPG" if you will.

It's not the game's fault that you went into it with the wrong expectations, nor is it the game's fault that you're 11 years late to the party, and the game doesen't have all thouse modern creature comforts that you've come to rely on.

Deus-EX is bloody ancient! You just digged up a relic from the past, and now you are complaining that it's features are not as polished as modern games?
Really Sherlock? Welcome to the world of digital archaeology!

But ok, i'll be kind to you, you want to try a classic FPSRPG that is more combat heavy and less RPG? Go dig up a copy of System Shock 2, that will be more your speed i think (but it's not a straight up shooter either, so don't expect that).

Well, you've came late to the thread and that was like my first post. Besides I was not expecting comfort from bloody modern games for ****S SAKE! DO YOU PEOPLE EVEN READ MY POSTS?
I am comparing it to the old games...god..

And as for what is wrong with the GUI, the looks are wrong. All that OS like stylization ****, I mean compare it with Unreal GUI or any classic game. Hell I would even take UT3 GUI over that, no offense.

Oh and as for the modern skycity scapes argument, you can bloody make great modern cities at original Unreal engine, that's not the bloody point.
But some of the design bits are just pure lazyness, i mean see my screenshots and see that aligment, I could fix the aligment within few seconds myself.

Misaligned textures are a minor issue. Maybe due to the brushwork used they could never be aligned satisfyingly enough, so they just left it like that so one part is aligned with the geometry it's on while the other is aligned with the different geometry it's on.

You really can't. You also might want to use some soap if you're so bloody.

I hope not evil green liquid soap. Also wth I said modern skycity, lol.
But yes you can, I saw some great city custom maps for UT for example.

I inspected that part carefuly and no, it's just laziness or they ran out of time, I don't know. Because none of the sides is really aligned to the geometry.

It's not aligned properly because the tile and bricklayers of the game's universe were lazy.

Lazy? They were incredibly hard workers. Do have any idea how hard it must be to lay such oddly shaped bricks around the edges? That is some devotion to your craft of asymmetrical, ugly brick laying.
