I did investigate Unexpect.

Brief tangent to explain my opinion, typically, to discern between the two veins of metal, I use the ever-so-common words tech and prog. I usually apply prog to things where the complexity is derived sheerly from virtuosity (think things like Dream Theater, Iced Earth, Nightwish or Death) and I use tech to indicate things that the complexity is more theory-based (think Meshuggah/Psyopus/Behold... the Arctopus/Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza/basically 90% of my favorite metal,) and while I love both, I have a major tech leaning (by this definition.)

Unexpect fell more on the prog side, the bits that I've listened to. I got Utopia and We, Invaders, and I certainly liked We, Invaders more of the two, leading me to believe I should check out In a Flesh Aquarium. Lots of good influences going into their music, and there was definite musical growth between those two releases. From the bit I've listened to, they're not quite getting my goat full-on, but rather, they've maybe piqued my goat's interest a bit.

Their bass player has a bass the size of a skateboard....

and i think they are quite theoretic. They incoperate loads of genres and in a wierd way. I also dont exactly call iced earth progressive but yeah...

On Iced Earth, I wouldn't call them an extreme at it, whatsoever, I was just trying to point out things in a similar vein of what I push towards 'proggy' rather than 'techy.'

Perhaps an easier way, in more concrete musical reference, to discern between my take on labelling something 'prog' and something 'tech' would be prog is the heir-apparent to classical music, and tech is like jazz junior. I mean, all music is derivative of a previous movement... these two terms, they're thrown around very loosely. Practically everything is called prog these days.

In so far as the genre bending goes, they do it very well, though genre-defiance fits perfectly in the classical ergo by my use, prog canon. It's very good, don't mistake me. It's not like I'm trying to hate on it, or even scoff at it. It's just on the other end of the technical spectrum, that draws my attention a little less is all I'm saying. I intend to download their latest album, I've just been busy downloading a couple of other things yet... but I'm curious as to what they're doing now. The EP was a great step.

Oh, and buy In The Absense of Truth. Like, yesterday. That album is amazing. Probably my favorite Isis to-date, and if you really dig Isis, check out Red Sparowes (it's basically instrumental Isis,) and Russian Circles (another instrumental in a similar vein.)

Someone on another forum brought up a good point on Meshuggah:
I just think with Meshuggah even the most hardcore of fans don't really "get" the music the first time through.
Like if I asked you to hum a part to one of the songs after 1 listen, it would be next to impossible.
Three weeks from now I guarentee everyone who likes this and continues to listen to it will be able to hear the whole thing in their heads.

I agree with that. It can take some time to get into their music.
That's pretty much what I do with any band I come across. If I don't like 'em at first, I listen more. :p
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Opeth, for instance, took me some time to get into. Most Black Metal bands, too.

I get what you're saying... I mean, as long as I don't dread listening to it (which takes something like say... ICP, where if given the choice between listening to it again and pain, I'd take pain every time,) and especially if I see some promise, I will listen a lot, burn a cd to take with me in my car, and relisten, to try to squeeze everything I can out of it. Often times it works well that way.

You're fairly familiar with my tastes I imagine, given that, which of those Entombed albums would you recommend for me to give a try? I've never heard any of their previous work.

Well seeing you come from straight up death metal. Get Clandestine. It is a excellent infact even one of the most important swedish death release. Morning Star is the best example of their general Death'n Roll work.

Some bands take me a long time to get into like Absu. However some bands which should be hard to get into i loved instantly like Gorguts - obscura and arcturus. I just dont like meshuggah they might be technically brilliant but that doesnt change this.

Now that you mention the pattern of the corpse paint, I am starting to have doubts... Pretty sure it's Varg, though, he used to wear corpse paint in his Mayhem days, and also used to be their guitarist.

I think it is time that i make a post about the only pure bm band i really enjoy.

It is Otargos and i dont know why i like them and darkthrone or something not. I just love this band.

But mainly this post is to express my love for Bathory. I have never tried them, but I have been listening to some of their stuff recently and...daaaaamn. I'm about to listen to about 20 songs in a row of theirs. Holy sh*t. :tup:

Oh, and I discovered this weekend that Machine Head f*cking rocks!
