Shamelessly promoting my friend's band, Digníty. He's the drummer. They've only just started out, but I think it sounds pretty good tbh. :)

Anyone seen the meshuggah bleed drum competition videos on you tube? Don't have links to the good ones atm but that song has the weirdest timing Ive ever heard.

Just came back from the Prog Nation show. Damn Opeth were amazing,

They played, Wreath, Master's Apprentices, The Baying of the Hounds, A single from their new upcoming album, and I forget the last song they played.

Also, the song's in 4/4. Weird timings indeed. :)

At least the few minutes I've heard. Haven't been arsed to sit through the whole thing because it's so repetitive.

It's kind of the Meshuggah drumwork signature that the handwork is 4/4, and the footwork is odd meter, changing and usually over the course of 128 or more beats in 4/4 syncing up, though the footwork is usually counted in sixteenths or thirty-second notes, which when juxtaposed with the 4/4 creates a very cyclical feel and greatly illustrates their understanding of the implications of polyrhythm..

Add in the fact that we're talking about a group that has mastered using the triplet as a device for nuanced rhythmic complexity and moving accents, and you pretty much have something that if you don't take the time to pay attention, you'll never even begin to know just what you missed.

[/nerd rant]

New Opeth album, "Watershed" is out! Picked up my copy today. Anyone else got it yet?

I'm still digesting it (so to speak), so I'll give my thoughts on it later.

I should be getting my pre-ordered special edition in the mail today or tomorrow.
